About Meagan Leppicello

As a recent graduate from The University of Rhode Island with a degree in marine biology I am seeking a position in wildlife conservation and education. I love sharing my passion for animals and aspire to show people all the incredible organisms and creative processes that occur in our natural world and why they’re worth protecting. I am extremely enthusiastic, motivated, and have a huge passion for ocean science. As a child growing up on a suburban working farm, I learned to care for many types of animals, and animal welfare and conservation values were instilled in me from a young age. The farm, combined with my love of the ocean, inspired me to go to school for marine biology. During summers while I was in college, I taught marine biology at summer camps for children ages 8-16. Working for both Schooner Inc. (New Haven, CT) and Sail Caribbean Ltd. (Northport, NY) has shown me how much of a positive impact I can have on children's curiosity towards nature.I am interested in connecting with people working in aquariums and zoos and would love to hear about any opportunities for aquarist and any other entry-level positions in such a setting.

Listed skills include Public Speaking, Leadership, Cpr Certified, First Aid, and 14 others.

Aquarist And Education Intern

Current

Providence, Rhode Island Area

I'm currently working as an intern for the fall semester as an aquarist. I prepare food for the animals according to their daily feeding schedules, feed, and pay close attention to each individual creature's behavior. I prepare water of the correct chemical composition and complete water changes for the aquarium. During public hours, I lead tours, assist guests at touch tanks and provide interesting information about various exhibits to children through adults.

Sep 2015 - Present

Aquatic Supervisor

Providence, Rhode Island Area

As an Aquatic Supervisor at The University of Rhode Island I was primarily responsible for planning in-services to help keep the lifeguards (and myself) up-to-date and practiced on emergency procedures and protocols in and out of the pool, resolve any conflicts in the pool area, and help keep the Aquatics center a positive work environment. Something I really enjoyed about this position was our trainings - the in-services were extremely helpful as a monthly reminder for following the steps in rescues, both active and passive victim drownings, and spinal stabilization. We discovered a way to incorporate games into the in-services between drills- it really kept the group morale up!

Sep 2012 - May 2015

Captain

Tortola, Bvi

I lived on a 52-foot monohull sailboat for 3 months with 12 children in the British Virgin Islands, helping to teach them sailing, scuba diving, marine biology, snorkeling, and other ocean adventures! Prior to this program I had never sailed, and throughout the two-week training I learned and learned to teach about keeping up with boat maintenance, safety and emergency procedures in the British Virgin Islands, and sailing theory and practical skills!I communicated thoroughly with parents of students on a weekly basis, assisting students in adapting to the new environment which included helping students learn how to make meals, keep good hygiene aboard a boat, and promote responsibility of their own items. I taught lessons on sail theory, practical sailing skills on a monohull sailboat, and marine biology and tropical ecosystems. Throughout this program I also communicated thoroughly and consistently with other staff members about student safety, interest in activities, and overall well-being.

May 2014 - Aug 2014

Marine Educator

Schooner Inc

New Haven, Ct

Throughout my time with Schooner I constructed 2-week-long class curriculums including projects, activities, and discussions about aspects of marine and seashore science. I instructed elementary and middle school students about essential marine biology concepts, and collaborated daily with counselors about lessons, teaching techniques, and student learning processes. I also kept in contact with parents of students, helping make sure everyone was doing the best that they could be!

May 2013 - Aug 2013

Teacher & One-On-One Assistant

The Children'S Farm

Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul Area

The Children's Farm is a preschool on a working suburban farm. The students there range in ages from 2.5-5 years, and are usually still working on getting along, learning how to be in a classroom setting, and enjoying play. I assisted in creating lesson plans, worked with the children and larger animals, such as the horses, in order to foster comfortability with animals in a controlled setting, and helped the children feed and care for the animals. This incredible program really allows the children to play and be outside as much as possible, while learning critical age-appropriate skills such as participating in group activities. When a one-on-one teacher was needed for children with a tough time getting along or sticking with the group, I would redirect the child, helping interpret what the group is doing in a way that the child can understand.
