For my Master of Environmental Studies thesis research, I have been using a multiple lines of evidence approach to assess potential contamination in wetlands surrounding a wastewater treatment facility. This facility is scheduled to close in January 2020, and remediation of the area will occur after that. My research will assist in the remediation planning. I continued my experience with field research working for Dr. Richard Petrone and his students with their research on wetland restoration and creation in the Oil Sands region. I collected data from water loggers and EC towers and took weekly water table and soil moisture/temperature measurements. I also collected and processed diatom samples from fen pools with a PhD student for her thesis, and performed weekly plant surveys in a constructed fen upland with a Masters student for his thesis. I collected and processed surface water and groundwater samples. As I was the assistant for a number of students, as well as working on my own undergraduate thesis project, I had to have good time management skills to ensure that I was able to complete all of my tasks. This position also helped me to develop my problem solving skills in the field, as occasionally equipment would malfunction or weather would impede our work and I would have to determine the proper course of action. This position allowed me to acquire new laboratory skills as I processed ground and stream water. I also collected and handled water samples in the field. I truly enjoyed my time working as a Lifeguard for the City of Kitchener, because I was able to work with a group of really amazing and supportive coworkers. I love to swim, so working in and around a pool was especially exciting. I also enjoyed teaching swimming lessons and passing on that appreciation for swimming to younger children. This position was a great lesson in how to act in stressful situations, as the pool would often become full and it would be quite demanding.

Working at Durham Forest was an incredible experience because I was able to share my excitement for nature and outdoor activities with visiting school children. Visiting school groups (Grade 6) would stay for two and a half days, and this offered a unique opportunity for myself and my coworkers to build relationships with the children through all of the outdoor activities we did. I also had the opportunity to continue improving my teamwork skills through teaching low ropes challenge lessons. This was an interesting experience for me, as I learned as much about teamwork from the children as they (hopefully) learned from me. This position also gave me the opportunity to improve my identification skills, since the children were always asking questions about what they were seeing on hikes. This job was truly an amazing experience, and cemented for me that I want to have a career where I can be outdoors. Show less
