About Meaghan-Winnifred Souter

I am a marketing professional with a passion for communications and brand management, and a background in eco-tourism, outdoor adventure, as well as the food service industry. During my time in the Business – Marketing program at Algonquin College, I was the team leader for a total of three major projects spanning an 8 month period. I organized the projects, and guided the team through two semesters. At the end of this time we earned one of the top two positions to present the marketing plan we developed to our client. Ultimately we won the favour of the client for developing a plan that best fit their needs, and were then asked to continue working with them to help guide the implementation process. The Baking and Pastry Arts program taught me the importance of discipline, time management, and precision. Being given a list of recipes, and a limited time frame to complete them all helped develop time management skills, as well as improve my ability to multi-task. In this program we were able to learn not only how to follow a recipe, but how each ingredient in the recipe plays their part in making the final product. Baking is similar to chemistry in that you are combining certain amounts of different elements to create a desired reaction. While baking has taught me the importance of following age-old processes step by step, cooking has taught me the art of improvisation. While there are still recipes to follow, it's much easier to make substitutions when cooking. To be successful in a kitchen you have to be able to work as a team, make limited space and supplies stretch, and follow strict health and safety guidelines. I was particularly interested in enforcing these guidelines, and so I transitioned into a health and safety representative role, where I would inspect machinery and work spaces multiple times a day to ensure all codes were being met. Three pillars of success in outdoor adventure are leadership, teamwork, and risk management. We explored these skills extensively while training in the Outdoor Adventure program. We were placed in a wide array of situations while training in the field, and developed the critical thinking skills required to problem solve quickly, and efficiently with limited access to resources. Being able to think outside the box and mitigate any risks was key to finding a solution. I believe that my acquired skills and experience would allow me to excel in a variety of communications roles in different industries, although my interests lie within the entertainment, and technology sectors.

Through teamwork, and collaboration with other staff we were able to find dynamic ways to solve problems, as well as develop possible new events. I worked closely with two other members to create social media content to promote the incubator and upcoming events. The last two weeks of my contract with the incubator were a little different. Due to health concerns surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, we were forced to halt all events, and shift the remainder of our work online. With some out of the box thinking, and a lot of determination, we made the transition and began brainstorming how to continue to provide our incubated companies the support and guidance they had before. I reviewed incubated companies social media presence, and put together detailed recommendations for how to continue marketing themselves through the pandemic. My final project was self-assigned. After analyzing what our members needed, and what our staff was capable of doing, I put together a list of various webinars, and video sessions that could be hosted to keep our audience engaged through uncertain times. I then researched various online tools that could be leveraged to help these sessions run smoothly. The goal was to take the essence of the events we had been planning, and find ways to apply them to the current situation, as well as make them as accessible as possible. Show less

I then developed a media posting schedule to be followed, as well as guidelines for online engagement with the audience. I created three templates to be filled in and updated as needed. These documents varied from the most basic outline of the value proposition, to the highly technical spec sheet for the product itself. Show less

Front House

Thimblecakes

Ottawa, Ontario

I worked at the front-of-house for Thimblecakes for a year. This experience was unique to other bakery positions in that they are an allergy conscious, vegan-friendly bakery, also offering a variety of gluten-free options. One of the best parts about this job is seeing the satisfaction on a customer's face when they try our products for the first time and realize that their dietary needs don't have to stop them from having delicious, quality food. One of the best parts about this job is seeing the satisfaction on a customer's face when they try our products for the first time and realize that their dietary needs don't have to stop them from having delicious, quality food. I used my knowledge of the products to influence customers purchasing decisions, as well as to find accommodations for any combination of allergies or restrictions. Through patience and empathy, I was able to handle any unsatisfied customers concerns, always coming to a resolution that left the customer happy, and willing to return. I take pride in my ability to give each customer a unique experience, and always remembered those who came back. In my time at Thimblecakes, I received multiple compliments and 5-star reviews from customers for my service. I had the chance here to use some of my artistic skills. With rotating monthly, and seasonal features, someone had to update the sign board - done in chalk. I quickly became the one to be assigned this task after I was asked to write a quick holiday themed message, and turned it into a winter wonderland. Occasionally a customer would want some customizations done to their product, in which case I'd use some creative thinking to find a way to give the customer what they want, while following policies, and working with what items we have. Closing the store normally takes over an hour to do alone, once the doors are locked. After my first month there, I started to figure out how to accomplish this more efficiently. I was able to cut down on time by multi-tasking while the store was still open. By my second month I had my closing time down to half an hour, leaving me more time to do odd jobs around the shop. Being able to find creative solutions to a lack of space and tools was key to managing the various tasks assigned. Knowing when certain products needed to be packed, when trucks were leaving, how long recipes would take to complete, and when ingredients would be available all played a role in managing my time on a daily basis. Ensuring clear, respectful communication between the food prep, packing, and cleaning teams helped build stronger interdepartmental relationships, and ultimately helped the flow of operations run more smoothly. Even though we worked in separate sections of the building, we were still ultimately a team, and if one section was slowed down it effected everyone. For this reason, most of us trained in various areas to better accommodate different departments needs as they would arise. As an example, I was a cook in the "hot kitchen", but it was not unheard of to be asked to help pack food, prepare ingredients, and occasionally help the soup team if they were behind. After my first year with Farm Boy, my interest in health and safety regulations increased. I familiarized myself with the provincial regulations, and secured a position as part of the internal health and safety representative team. I would inspect the machines and workspaces multiple times a day to ensure proper procedures were being followed, all cooking and cooling temperatures were being met, and all machines were up to code. I provided detailed accounts of any incidents or gaps in our safety practices, and would collaborate with upper management to find resolutions to these problems. Show less
