Edberg Investments is an investment consulting firm headquartered in Bethesda, MD primarily responsible for managing Edberg Associates (Family Office). Expertise in alternative investments, socially responsible investing, real estate, options trading, credit and equity analysis, investment structuring and negotiations, portfolio management and capital markets.Edberg Associates: (i) invests in public equities with a time horizon of at least six months; (ii) sells covered calls to generate income; and (iii) structures calendar call spreads for portfolio growth. Edberg Associates also invests in triple-net commercial real estate as the sole owner, not as part of an investment group. Edberg Associates currently owns properties in Delaware, Connecticut and Georgia.

Increased assets under management to $150 million, including the launching of two funds, the Short Duration Fund and the Access Africa Fund. Established relationships with Registered Investment Advisors looking for impact investment funds to support portfolio diversification.  Supervised three regional managers and a staff eight investment officers and analysts. Recruited and hired investment team members and managed an annual budget of $1.2 million. Set investment strategy, annual and semi-annual investment goals, managing the pipeline and evaluating team member performance. Traveled extensively in Sub-Saharan Africa, Central Asia and India, leading four due diligence missions, annually; meeting with government officials, banking regulators and prospective investment targets. Negotiated eight equity transactions of $34 million in frontier and emerging markets. Disbursed $50 million in annual investment commitments.  Served as Project Manager for the development and implementation of Salesforce.com, cloud- based CRM and pipeline management software for more efficient operations. Participated actively in leading industry groups, including the Council of Microfinance Equity Funds, New York Microfinance Council and International Association of Microfinance Investors. Asked on numerous occasions to represent MicroVest on conference panels and as a moderator of panel discussions.  Negotiated and invested $15 million for a 3% stake in ProCredit Holdings, KGaA (Frankfurt, Germany).

Managed a portfolio of US$136 million in debt, quasi-equity and equity investments across three investment vehicles.  Supervised two regional managers and a staff seven investment officers and analysts. Disbursed $35 million in annual debt commitments, with an average loan size of $1.5 million.  Led the negotiation of a $3.3 million equity investment in Grama Vidyal for a 15% stake. Led the negotiation of a $1.4 million equity investment in Swadhaar FinServe for a 15% stake. Held staff accountable and terminated the employment of underperforming staff inherited upon my arrival at the firm. Developed and formalized human resources polices in coordination with the Human Resources Director Strengthened portfolio management function by risk weighting assets and instituting a monthly ‘Watch List’ meeting.

Responsible for developing new business leads, identifying and researching investment opportunities in the banking sector worldwide, leading investment due diligence teams, performing credit risk and equity analyses, leading appraisals and investment negotiations. Led credit due diligence appraisal, negotiation, and documentation of two $20 million trade finance lines to two commercial banks in Ecuador, and two $10 million trade finance lines to two commercial banks in Jordan.  Led due diligence appraisal, negotiation, and documentation of three equity investments in financial institutions globally for $9.5 million, and debt of over $30 million and quasi-equity of over $20 million.  Structured and presented IFC’s first partial credit guarantee to a Jordanian financial institution.  Coached six analysts in appraisal and structuring of transactions to banks and microfinance institutions in Jordan, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Paraguay, Haiti, Bosnia and Honduras.

Identified and researched investment opportunities in the banking sector worldwide, performed credit risk and equity analyses, led appraisals and negotiations, reviewed financial projections, and made recommendations on deal structuring. Consistently met and exceeded high-performance targets in facilitating multimillion-dollar transactions and disbursements.  Developed and launched $30 million structured finance facility designed to provide credit enhancement products supporting local currency lending to microfinance institutions. Structured and presented IFC’s first direct ruble loan, which was to a Russian small business bank, and IFC’s first ruble-linked loan to a Russian microfinance institution. Mentored analysts in appraisal and structuring of six transactions to commercial banks and microfinance institutions in Bosnia, Nicaragua, Romania, Russia and Kyrgyzstan, and subsequent writing of investment decision papers.

Performed credit analysis, produced detailed financial models, and structured investments; presented investment recommendations to senior management. Drafted investment term sheets and negotiated terms and conditions with project sponsors. Served as liaison with loan syndication partners. Monitored equity performance, debt service, and annual audits. Reviewed insurance policies to ensure compliance with investment covenants. Maintained country portfolios and designed/presented innovative investment strategies. Supervised eight portfolio investments in commercial banks and microfinance institutions with investment value of $50+ million.
