About Ana Medeiros
I used to say I am a grown woman who never overcomes the toddler’s “Why?” phase. Alongside this curiosity, I aspire to “be the change”. Together, curiosity and a sense of purpose fuel and drive my career.The intricate and complex workings of the human brain never cease to amaze me. Even more intriguing is how the brain responds to an injury or disease. Its limited self-recovery capability leads to permanent functional limitation and devastating consequences for individuals with neurological conditions and society. That’s precisely why I pursued a Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy and delved deeper into basic neurophysiology during my Master’s and Ph.D. studies, focusing on brain plasticity in animal models.To translate scientific knowledge "from bench to bedside”, I completed my Clinical Research Training at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (IL, USA), followed by a Post-Doctorate at the Burke Medical Research Institute (Cornell University, NY, USA) in collaboration with Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. My research concentrated on contemporary neurorehabilitation methods for stroke and spinal cord injury motor recovery – i.e., non-invasive brain stimulation, robotic devices, and virtual reality.Upon returning to Brazil, I had the privilege of co-establishing a Technological Development Unit - the Laboratory for Electrical Stimulation of the Nervous System (UDT-LabEEL-UERJ, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) - where I served as a Senior Research Associate. After taking a two-year maternity break, I returned to LabEEL, only to face disruptions due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic - which became my catalyst for innovation projects.In 2021, I was honored to receive the Programa Doutor Empreendedor FAPERJ grant for my innovation project. During this time, I designed and coordinated the development of cost-effective methods and technologies aimed at driving the digital transformation of Physiotherapy. This initiative involved undergraduate students and professionals, FAPERJ scholarship holders, all under my supervision.More recently, I took a significant step forward by assuming the role of Industrial Property Researcher at the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI, Brazil). My goal is to make a meaningful contribution to INPI's efforts to become a world-class intellectual property office.

My research focuses on the development and validation of more effective therapeutic approaches for motor recovery after neurological injury/disease. In this sense, we are investigating the nature and magnitude of neurophysiological, kinematic, and functional effects of neuromodulatory techniques, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), combined to functional training on a virtual reality environment or robotic devices for the excellence of motor performance in healthy subjects and stroke survivors. This Post-doctoral training has been developed in collaboration with the Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
