As an independent researcher and lead author, I am collaborating with WWF Australia on a research project focused on the impact of the built environment on nature, and the current and emerging design approaches to mitigate these impacts. Our research looks at the role of voluntary Green Building Rating Tools in mitigating adverse effects on biodiversity within the built environment through the development of a novel framework that assesses rating tools against global Targets for biodiversity conservation. Additionally, I conducted in-depth interviews with 26 Australian built environment industry stakeholders to investigate the factors influencing the adoption of green building rating tools and sustainability practices in Australia. This project seeks to answer key questions about the best approaches for conserving and restoring biodiversity in urban settings. We identify barriers and enablers to these approaches, and areas of focus to enhance positive ecological outcomes within cities. Our work presents the broad issues of environmental impacts and how to addressed them from a holistic perspective, while developing a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between biodiversity and the built environment. By fostering this understanding, we hope to support the construction industry in transitioning towards Nature Positive buildings and developments.
