I taught a fifth/sixth grade combination class at San Ardo School. My students were all English Language Learners, and I utilized SDAIE strategies, as well as interactive notebooks in my daily instruction. I spent a wonderful week at Camp KEEP with my sixth grade students. Camp KEEP is located in Montana de Oro State Park, near Los Osos. We dug in the estuary mud flats, went hiking in both the sand dunes and hills, and discovered some wonderful animals in the tide pools.

Greenfield California

I taught sixth grade language arts, math, and social studies at Vista Verde Middle School in Greenfield California. I started at Vista concurrent with the state takeover of the school district, and learned more in those two years than I believe I would have in five years elsewhere. In those two years I became proficient with the following software: O.A.R.S., Compass Learning, BrainPOP, AcitivInspire, Easy Grade Pro, and various online grading systems. I also used a Promethean Board (interactive whiteboard) daily.My students consisted of 99% percent English Language Learners, at various stages of proficiency. I learned to use SDAIE strategies (speaking in phrases, using imagery wherever possible, drawing on the students knowledge of their own language with cognates) constantly. The state trustee had professional development on the forefront in the district. We had a weeklong "Teach Like a Champion" seminar in the summer, as well as monthly refreshers during the year.All in all, a whirlwind first teaching job.
