Scare Actor
As a scare actor (or as we are lovingly referred to as Ministers of Fear by our bosses), I got to enjoy a change of pace while working weekend evenings during the Halloween season. I took my scaring duties seriously and aimed to give all patrons who came through my set the very best experience possible. I enjoyed having the opportunity to network with different individuals, while working in an entirely new industry. Also, this job gave me the chance to truly do something different while enjoying myself at the same time. This was a part-time position that I attended after my normal working hours as a Software Developer.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
I assisted Dr. Nilufer Onder with her research surrounding Computer Science Education. This research is in its beginning stages, and most of the work was focused around literature reviews. The goal was to help design a research experiment to study how Computer Science students learn throughout their academic career and to focus on a specific area of learning that will be decided following completion of the literature review.
Student Academic Mentor (Sam)
As a SAM, I ran weekly meetings that students enrolled in Discrete Structures were invited to attend. In these sessions, we reviewed homework problems, extra problems, and discussed the course as a whole. In addition to provided academic help, I also provided professional and personal advice as requested by the students. My main goal in this role was to provide high-level discussions of not only Discrete Structures, but also Computer Science all together including post-graduation life.
Undergraduate Teaching Assistant
I assisted with senior-level chemical engineering courses and provided guidance and feedback on assignments and team project for Senior Process Design.Another facet of this position is working alongside the professor to develop individual projects designed to challenge students while still being in-scope with the course.
Software Developer Internship
Quality Systems Engineer
I supported both Titanium Castings and Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) operations for Howmet as a Quality Systems Engineer. I oversaw/continually improved the quality systems and provided guidance for external audits including Nadcap and AS9100, and all internal audits.Along with QSE position, I was primary Quality Engineer for all HIP operations and Quality Engineer for TiCast customers. I maintained the corrective actions board for HIP and worked closely with customers for both HIP and TiCast.
Engineer Training Program
Arconic and Howmet Aerospace became two legally separated companies in April 2020 - this update reflects that. I finished my second rotation at Thermatch in overlay coatings in June 2020. I was the product engineer for Pratt & Whitney Canada blades and vanes. I helped create a better flow of product in the shop that required engineering disposition and customer approval. Total time of product going out-of-flow and into customer hands decreased from many months to matter of days with the improved flow. I also helped develop proper documentation methods for approving customer product on a robotic grit blast machine. I finished in my third rotation back at Titanium Castings in November 2020. I was scheduled to move down to Hampton, VA for my final rotation but the pandemic did change those plans. I was the process engineer for Honeywell product in the shop and assisted the Acid process owner with her daily activities.
Engineer Training Program
This program consists of three 6 month rotations to different business units within Arconic. My first rotation with at Titanium Castings located in Whitehall, MI. During this rotation, I was responsible for a family of parts and a customer. Along with that, I also assisted the Acid and Monoshell process owners with their day-to-day roles. I dealt with problems on the floor at various operations involving my parts and (with the help of my mentor and other engineers) came to the best method of solving such problems. Along with own product and processes, I also helped develop the initial method of procuring information for the implementation of rigorous OEE oversight within the plant. Along with these activities, I was lead on an A3 geared towards identifying and solving a major yield issue for my part. My second rotation was completed at Thermatech Coatings. I assisted my mentor with day-to-day activities like dispositioning parts and communicating with customers. I also conducted various studies to identify problems within my responsible section of coating. During this rotation, Arconic and Howmet split into two separate companies. Please see the Howmet experience section for the continuation of my rotational program.
