About Megan Clibbens

Currently I am studying for my Masters in Journalism as well as completing my qualifications for my an NCTJ and a BJTC at Leeds Trinity University. am looking for graduate jobs within Journalism and Media, as well as an opportunities within PR.I have developed my confidence and my ability to lead under pressure and maintain a high level of teamwork through a variety of leadership roles; such as Head Girl, Politics Social Secretary, and DofE Assessor. This has provided multiple challenges that have helped me develop an extensive amount of experience in mass and minimal event planning. This means that I have been consistently building connections and maintaining an effective line of communication between myself and the vendors. I'm looking to expand my network and develop my communication skills. I understand the importance of building up a rapport with people and establishing trust between myself and those whom I am representing. My ability to work within a team is paramount to my leadership style and ethos when working towards a goal, an ability that has been successful within academic, professional and athletic realms. Opportunities in any journalistic sector is of interest to me as I am very open-minded and keen to learn. However, I do have a particular fascination with Sports Journalism. As a keen athlete myself, I would like to bring my knowledge and experience within Rugby Union to a role within journalism and meet other like-minded individuals. I have experience as a student radio commentator for Football, Rugby Union, and Rugby League. I would also like to explore a career within military and international conflict journalism, as a previous cadet I have gained a fascinating insight into the forces and my political science degree has deepened this interest further. I am motivated, dedicated, and capable of coping with trying circumstances. My goal is to broaden my general knowledge and pick up new skills. I'm always up for a challenge!

  • Stonegate Group
    Bar Assistant
    Stonegate Group Sep 2022 - Jun 2023
    Selly Oak, Birmingham
I was employed as a bartender in a busy student bar near Birmingham. I was in charge of serving food and drinks, handling money, taking orders, and shutting down. I've been able to develop my ability to communicate clearly under pressure and fulfil customer expectations thanks to this position. I particularly enjoyed this role due to the rapport I was able to build with my colleagues, management team, and more regular customers. I left this role following my graduation due to leaving the city, but remain in close contact with most of the team. Towards the final months of my employment at the Bristol Pear, I began doing some occasional promotion on their instagram page. Although my time on this project was limited, and promotional content was made during quieter working hours, I really enjoyed developing my abilities on editing websites and would love to develop this skill further. My content was also mentioned a few times on the Stonegate 'round robins', commending my TikTok's and advising sites to follow a similar pattern on their social media.

Incorporating my love of Rugby and my passion for journalism, I provided commentary for various Rugby Union and League matches throughout the year. I also started to develop my knowledge around football, taking advantage of opportunities by providing online media commentary for Aston Villa and Birmingham City. I also provided radio commentary at the BUCs Rugby finals and was nominated for sports team member of the year. This has been one of the most rewarding and exciting challenges I have faced yet, and one of the many reasons I am pursuing a career in journalism!
  • University Of Birmingham Politics Society
    Politics Society Social Secretary
University Of Birmingham Politics Society Jun 2022 - Jun 2023
    Birmingham, England, United Kingdom
I was elected as social secretary of the Politics Society at University of Birmingham by my peers, in my third and final year of university. To gain the role I created a manifesto, and outline of the events I wanted to deliver and my abilities that would make these a success. Then I delivered a presentation to my peers and won their votes and confidence to enrich their student social experience. I took on the role of Events Secretary part way through the year, as a result of a resignation, which doubled my workload but also my determination to exceed student expectations. Committee Socials: Throughout the year I hosted a number of committee socials such as quizzes and pub trips. This helped boost morale and communication among the team, as well as enabled us to make great friendships and connections.Pizza + Pints: This was a Fresher's event that was held on The Vale (first year area) at a student bar, we provided free dominoes pizza and encouraged the purchase of memberships and involvement of freshers within our society. Bar Crawl: An annual event, this was in partnership with Vodbull. This involved creating a budget, completing a risk assessment, liasing with our partners, providing chaperones, merchandise purchasing, and day-of leadership. Returner's Quiz: An event for non-first year students, allowed for older students to form new connections and for committee to promote upcoming events. Politics in the Pub: A free casual social for all members that contributed to the community that we were building within the society.Coalition of Chaos: A bar crawl collaboration with multiple student political parties, led by Politics Society.PolSoc Summer Ball: An annual formal event catering for 200 students.I have also developed an extensive handover pack for my successor to help her hold her her own events and socials with plenty of advice and important contacts provided.
  • University Of Birmingham Reclaim Campus Uob
    Social Secretary
University Of Birmingham Reclaim Campus Uob Jun 2022 - Jun 2023
    Birmingham, England, United Kingdom
ReclaimCampusUoB is a society at the University of Birmingham that advocated for the safety of students of marginalised genders on campus. It was formed as a response to multiple incidents that violated student safety on campus' around the UK. As social secretary, I put on multiple events that prioritised student safety and comfortability. These events were more low-key and provided an easy-going environment for people to approach our other committee members. We distributed personal safety alarms, helplines, and information to the students at these events. Socials that I organised and ran included a board games night, Christmas market meet-up, and a collaboration with IFC UoB (Intersectional Feminist Campaign Society) which involved canvas and tote-bag painting. I also hosted a collaboration with Mentality (a society advocated for Male mental health) that was a focus group that welcomed guest speaker, Dr. Sophia King-Hill. This focus group centred around "What is Harassment" and opened up discussion and debate as to how students can collaborate and understand one another. I really enjoyed this role as I was able to gain experience in a range of events, while also contributing to the changing political landscape.
