City Year is a non-profit education organization funded by Americorps that is dedicated to combatting the drop-out crisis in 25 major cities across America. City Year puts boots on the ground to assist with attendance, behavior, and course performance in schools lacking resources and support.I served in a 6th grade classroom at Kramer Middle School to: - Support teachers with direct instruction - Use data to create a "focus list" for students who are at-risk in Academics, Behavior, and/or Attendance- Plan and implement strategic small group and one-on-one intervention - Plan and implement engaging "lunch clubs" for students to support socio-emotional learning- Plan and implement after-school programming, including tutoring students and a wide variety of clubs and activities- Greet students as they come into the building and support with behavior management during transitions to help create a positive environmentAs the literacy coordinator for the team and school, I have implemented various successful literacy initiatives. Among them was the school's first successful spelling bee, a line of posters entitled "City Year Reads" describing our favorite books in middle school and what we're reading now to promote literacy in their daily lives, and the launch of an online literary magazine.Outside of the school, corps members go through extensive education and career training. We develop our fundraising, recruitment, event-planning, and physical service skills, as well as leadership development and team building exercises.
