My research focuses on protein trafficking in organelle biogenesis, using melanosome biogenesis as a model system. I use a variety of cell biological techniques to assess the mechanisms underlying mutations causing Hermansky Pudlak Syndrome, a series of genetic disorders affecting lysosome related organelles and resulting in oculocutaneous albinism, bleeding disorders, immunological defects and lung disorders. I also completed a fellowship in the Penn-PORT program, an IRACDA fellowship combining research (75%) and teaching at a minority-serving institution (25%) and enjoy teaching science to undergrads and to the wider community in outreach events.
