I was hired to assist and shadow the Education/Outreach Coordinator and to learn the many processes that go into managing and maintaining the Reserve. Throughout the summer season I learned valuable communication skills when working with Ebey docents, I learned how to relay and present information to the public as a staff member in the historic Ebey house, and I completed basic office tasks for other employees. In addition to this, I also learned the fundamentals that go into sending and applying for grants, how to create and update historic site bulletins, and the elementary understanding of inhabitants and building standards of individuals who live within the Reserve. This position was what cemented my interest in community and outdoor education/administration.

Whidbey Island

Over the summer season, I had responsibly opened and closed the parks, completed laborious grounds maintenance work, operated the state park’s front office, and partook in daily janitorial work. We unfortunately were short staffed for the entire season, so it was also especially important for us to work together to successfully communicate and execute tasks.
