About Megan Scribner
Words matter. Every day, we build up or tear down bridges with the words we use. Often the loudest voices, those who exploit and exacerbate division, get the most attention. While others, on both sides, overwhelmed by the acrimony, stick to the comfort of their bubbles cementing their feelings about those on the outside. There are not enough spaces where we can listen to each other, see each other in a new light, and discover what we may have in common. With this in mind, I created Building Bridges Word by Word. (https://buildingbridgeswbw.com/)The project is a natural outgrowth of my love of words and my career as an editor. For over 30 years, I have worked with a wide range of writers helping them to bring their ideas and stories to life. One of the highlights of my career has been co-editing three poetry anthologies, Teaching with Fire, Leading from Within, and Teaching with Heart. For these books, we worked with hundreds of teachers and leaders as they reflected on their work and life in relation to a cherished poem. From this experience, we learned that when people write a brief reflection on something that has meaning for them, they often reveal a deeply held value or experience that resonates with others, sometimes in surprising ways. These insights stayed with me and became the premise for this project. Building Bridges Word by Word invites you to write a short reflection on how a saying, quote, song, or poem is meaningful to you. It could be a saying that seems particularly significant these days. Or a quote that you’ve taped to your refrigerator or tacked on to your emails because it captures how you feel about the world. Or a song that helps you get through tough times or a poem that challenges you to think or act differently. By posting these stories side by side, Building Bridges Word by Word reflects the rich diversity of our country and our common humanity. Reading these stories enables us to discover that while we may be different, we have many of the same fears, hopes and dreams. With that understanding, we can begin to build bridges across our divides.I’m excited to embark on this project, using my skills and experience to build bridges across our divides, word by word. If you have a story you’d like to share, please reach out to me here at LinkedIn or at mscribner@buildingbridgeswbw@gmail.com. I’d be delighted to work with you on your story and post it on Building Bridges Word by Word. Your story will be an important part of the bridges we are building together across our divides. I look forward to hearing from you.
