Communications Lead
Communications Specialist
As the Communications Specialist at CMHA WW, I work with staff, clients, and donors to raise awareness and much needed funds for mental health. I pitch stories and organize interviews with media and CMHA WW experts. Through incredible partnerships with local media, we have regular monthly radio spots on 570 News Mike Farwell Show and Magic 106.1, the segments line up with mental health awareness months/weeks. CTV Kitchener segments highlight mental health awareness on a regular basis. My media outreach efforts result in an average of 8 media mentions per month. I update our website on a regular basis with original content I have created based on our strategic plan (story categories include: staff profiles, innovations in care, recovery & resiliency – client stories, CMHA WW donor stories). Content is then shared on social media and linked back to the CMHA WW website. To further engage with the general public, I initiated a monthly e-newsletter to promote CMHA WW news, training offerings/events, and fundraising opportunities. Creating and building content for Facebook and LinkedIn pages and increasing presence and followers on Twitter and Instagram are also part of this engagement. For five years, I have coordinate with OHL teams for our annual Talk Today program including awareness games with Guelph Storm and Kitchener Rangers, media relations, 50/50 draw. The program has grown to include classroom visits and partnership with Garrett McFadden - Guelph storm player and founder of McFadden’s Movement which has resulted in $46,000 funds raised for CMHA WW. Helping to plan, promote and participate in events to raise the profile of CMHA WW as an organization (Shopper’s Run for Women, Here4Hope, KW Chamber of Commerce Inspiring Women event) are also an important aspect of my job.
Public Relations Coordinator
As the Public Relations Co-ordinator for Ridley College, I created targeted videos and email marketing campaigns for Admissions and Advancement that contributed to an increase in enrollment and donations. I developed and managed a student life blog. I contributed content and implemented social media strategy (Facebook pages, Twitter and YouTube channel and have initiated a Social Media Mashup page, Instagram account and Pinterest account). I wrote articles for e-newsletters for parents and alumni as well articles for the alumni magazine. Liaising with the media to increase coverage for Ridley College was also a part of my position. Media hits include CHCH Morning Live Interview, articles in the Globe and Mail, articles in the St. Catharines Standard and radio interviews on (CFRA Ottawa, CJBQ, CKTB, and CJBK). Using HTML coding and Content Management Systems I updated the news, development and alumni sections of the website.
Coordinator
As the Coordinator of Communities in Bloom I prioritized work and kept myself motivated while working from a home based office. I researched, wrote, and compiled information for a Communities in Bloom profile book for the visiting judges. I also designed the 100 page Communities in Bloom profile book using Microsoft Publisher.
Video Journalist
As a Video Journalist for Persona 6 News I initiated interviews from original story ideas and built contacts in the community. I scheduled and conducted numerous interviews independently on a daily basis. I also interpreted and extracted relevant information from town and county council meetings for stories that would be of interest to viewers. While working for Persona I appeared on camera as an anchor, reporter and interviewer which helped me to develop my communication skills.
