I am passionate about the cultural influences of effective communication. Currently, I serve as Chief Staff Officer for Multicultural Affairs at ASHA, providing leadership in areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and professional development. Prior to my role at ASHA, I've worked as an assistant professor in the department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at Auburn University, an ASHA certified speech-language pathologist (SLP), a podcast producer and host of the Honeybee Connection podcast by MB, a speaker, and an educator.As a qualitative researcher and assistant professor, my research explored the role that culture and language play in effective communication, be this oral or written, with a special focus on African American English. As a practicing clinician, I worked 10 years as an SLP in 15 different NYC schools where the majority of my caseload included African American and Hispanic/Latinx students. As a speaker and educator, I’ve provided trainings on cultural-linguistic competence and humility, and effective communication to a variety of audiences including speech-language pathologists, teachers, librarians, caregivers, and people who are incarcerated. I engage participants in challenging conversations aligned with enlightening activities and heartfelt stories concerning culture, identity, language, and literacy. I address their impact on effective communication.
