During the last 8.5 years as a Machinist Mate (Nuclear) in the U.S. Navy, I have gained invaluable knowledge and involvement in the realm of nuclear power. Two years of accelerated training at NNPTC gave me the foundation to learn and retain information in a fast-paced environment. The following 3.5 years were spent onboard aircraft carrier USS Lincoln in Reactor Department's Propulsion Division, where I gained hands-on experience with preventive and corrective maintenance of the following: steam turbines and reduction gears, steam driven electrical generators, lubricating oil system pumps and purifiers, steam and motor driven fluid pumps, boiler systems, heat exchangers, and water distilling plants. These maintenance practices require an understanding of how each individual piece of equipment operates and skillful use of technical manuals and schematics for troubleshoot and repair. I spent 1 year as a program manager for valve and piping inspections, overseeing 35 personnel and achieving 100% inspection compliance with fleet standards. Additionally, I went through an in-depth qualification process to understand how these interconnected systems work with each other, and how to start up and shut down the machinery room equipment to include casualty response drills. With successful completion of this process, I was chosen for a supervisory role to take responsibility for the #2 Reactor Plant Propulsion Machinery Room and oversee a team of 7 other watch standers in the operation of their equipment. I was also chosen to assist in training over 50 personnel through their qualifications to ensure the safety of our workplace and impart valuable tools and skills to the next generation.After leaving USS Abraham Lincoln in 2020, I spent 1.5 years working at the Southwest Regional Maintenance Center in San Diego, CA, where I became a certified Quality Assurance Inspector (QAI). This role trained me to conduct thorough audits of controlled work packages and associated paperwork. As a QAI, it was necessary to have an intimate familiarity with the strict requirements of our governing maintenance manual to ensure our facility remained in compliance, thereby preventing material failures of mission critical equipment and safety fixtures.For the past year, I have been aboard USS Nimitz in Machinery division, using my past experience from USS Lincoln and as a QAI to lead and train personnel to achieve first time quality maintenance. I transition out of the Navy in February/March 2023, and I am excited to start this next chapter of my life in the civilian industry.
