I delivered training and on-the-ground support to build capacity in the VBTC newsroom during a 7-month assignment with the Australian Government’s Australian Volunteers Program, with a particular focus on news reporting and online journalism.During my assignment I assisted reporters to cover major news stories including the Melanesian Arts and Culture Festival, Melanesian Spearhead Group Leaders' Summit, diplomatic visits including by French President Emmanuel Macron, Tropical Cyclone Lola and the subsequent relief effort, Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting, COP28, and a three-month political crisis that involved court cases and two changes of government. I wrote, edited and published online content in Bislama.

I worked across media and digital communications as part of the university’s central Communications and Engagement division. This involved identifying opportunities to proactively engage media to promote ANU and its research, responding to enquiries from journalists, managing the university’s central social media accounts, and producing a range of content including media releases and feature stories.

ANU Reporter is the university’s flagship magazine. In 2022, a new website was launched to showcase news, research and analysis from across ANU.As deputy editor I commissioned and edited content from academics and communications staff for the website and twice-yearly magazine. I also wrote articles and feature stories, proofread the print edition, and designed production processes for print and digital content. In 2021 and 2022 I worked with internal and external stakeholders to deliver a major digital transformation project to redevelop the ANU Reporter website. This involved preparing the project brief and scope, in-depth content analysis to inform site structure, functionality and design, and working closely with designers, developers and IT professionals. I developed production and style guidelines and trained team members in content management principles, copyright, SEO and website accessibility.

In my capacity as senior producer I provided leadership by helping run the daily operations of the production desk and managing a team of producers, and taking on digital and print editing duties. I worked with newsroom editors and news directors to commission content, develop ideas with reporters, and produce and package content for online and print publication. As part of the production team I managed The Canberra Times' website and social media accounts, designed pages for the print edition and picked up myriad behind-the-scenes tasks to help the newsroom meet its goal of delivering relevant, timely content to Canberrans.

As a member of the production team I produced and edited content for online and print publication, published social media updates to drive web traffic, manage The Canberra Times homepage and breaking news updates. I also designed, edited and proofed pages for The Canberra Times and Sunday Canberra Times.

Pegs on the Line was launched in 2011 to record my adventures once leaving Australia.It has grown into an established website focusing on storytelling and providing advice and inspiration to travellers. Articles provide advice on topics such as solo female travel, CouchSurfing, budget travel and travelling while owning a home. Pegs on the Line offers insight into popular destinations as well as highlighting less-visited places. My posts on Serbia, Montenegro and Albania have become popular resources for visitors to those areas. In February 2014 I was included on a list of the Top 80 Female Travel Bloggers for 2014.I have partnered with tourism organisations, public relations agencies and tourism operators to promote destinations and experiences. I make the most of professional development opportunities including attending industry conferences such as Travel Bloggers Unite (Rotterdam, The Netherlands, 2013), Problogger (Gold Coast, Australia, 2014) and Travel Bloggers Exchange (Bangkok, Thailand, 2015).

As the group pages editor within Fairfax Media's Australian Community Media editorial hub I oversaw pages produced for publication in up to 170 ACM mastheads around Australia.My primary focus was producing and managing pages for syndication across the Fairfax Regional Media network, including nightly news and sport pages, motoring editorial pages and weekend lifestyle pages. I worked with masthead editors to plan and produce content to suit the needs of their audiences.

What is an editorial production co-ordinator you ask?Basically I was a professional middle (wo)man and problem solver. As an EPC I was a liaison between the various departments responsible for producing Fairfax Regional newspapers around Australia. I worked with the newsroom staff, sales managers, pre-press departments, advertising features writers and other content creators to ensure every page made its way to the print centre on deadline. The tasks involved in achieving that were diverse and include designing bespoke pages, sourcing content, providing quality control for newsroom produced news and sports pages, and ultimately working with all departments to deliver an excellent product to readers. The ACM Editorial Hub is a core division in Fairfax's digital-first approach to news, which has been implemented across its network of 170 regional mastheads. In any one hour I could be assisting a journalist in Victor Harbor in South Australia and then working with an editor in Mount Isa, Queensland. It was exciting, challenging and I learnt a lot about very small towns around Australia.My other responsibilities as a sub-editor within the ACM Sub Hub included producing news and sport pages for syndication across the Fairfax Regional network; producing special features for events including the AFL Grand Final, Tour de France and Cricket World Cup; co-ordinating and producing editorial elements for Domain real estate supplements for several Fairfax Regional mastheads; and anything else that came along the way. In short - there was no such thing as an 'normal' day for me.

As a young journalist there are few places better to learn your craft than at a regional newspaper - and The Advocate has a reputation as one of the best training grounds. I started as a reporter covering everything and anything - breaking news, politics, court rounds, community events, the local football match...the list goes on. I was given the opportunity to contribute as an acting chief of staff, leading the newsroom one day a week. I completed my newsroom experience on the sub-editing desk. I edited news, sport and travel copy, advertising features and wire copy.
