During my Sophomore year at Fairfield University, I realized just how many of my friends and peers were making weekly trips to the tanning salon for an airbrush spray tan. They all complained about the cost of this habit, not only was the service overpriced, they also had to pay to get there, since sophomores aren't allowed to have cars on campus. I started researching the cost of spray tanning equipment and supplies to see if I could provide this service at a lower cost, and I realized I could. I constructed an Instagram poll to see if I had enough potential customers and if they would be willing to pay the price that I would need to charge in order to profit. After the survey's success, I ordered all of the supplies and equipment that I would need to start a spray tanning salon out of my dorm room. I took online airbrush tanning classes and began to practice on my roommates. The last thing I needed to do to get started was to create an account and website with Square, which allowed me to book clients easily, organize appointments and accept credit card payments. From there, I focused on utilizing marketing tactics that I learned about in my courses to help build a client base, but found the most success from world of mouth marketing, one of the many perks of a small college community.
