My work background is most recently library-related, though I have worked as an academic writing tutor, in retail, in customer service, and in art restoration and curation. If you are familiar with your local library, no matter where you are in the US, you're probably aware of the repeated budget cuts the library takes year after year, no matter its value to the community. What that means for librarians, especially those in management positions, is we must think creatively and actively problem-solve at every step. In this environment, I have regularly been challenged and I can always find a way forward, even if my plan seems unorthodox at the outset. I have managed a team through various versions of remote, hybrid, and return to in-person schedules and I am incredibly proud of them. I learn new things every day and I am endlessly interested and curious in the stories behind people and organizations. My desire to move out of strictly library-related work comes from a desire to learn and grow in a different field. Twenty years in one building, in a management role? I very much hope to take a step away from supervisory positions--I'd like to be responsible for myself and my work, not that of other people. The toolkit I bring includes extensive research skills across disciplines as well as experience with data management and market trends. With clients and colleagues, I am an active listener, concentrating on helping both parties to clarify goals and establish next steps.My desire for my next position is to work independently for a common goal. I seek a work culture which views red tape, micromanagement, and meetings as less-is-more situations, allowing employees the autonomy to find their flow instead of being locked in as a cog in a machine.
