My responsibilities at the Grand Valley State University Campus galleries consisted mainly of tracking and analyzing gallery attendance day-to-day. I also provided excellent customer support to gallery visitors via e-mail, telephone, or conversation. This position required that I be highly knowledgeable about the student artist community at Grand Valley, as well as upcoming events around the university.

The most important element of my job as a Lead Writing Consultant is mentoring between eight and fifteen newly hired consultants each fall semester. I also serve as an intermediary between consultants and Writing Center administration. Leads identify areas of need and run training seminars to address them; they also pilot fall orientation. Additionally, I have represented the FMCFWAMA at a series of professional conferences ranging from local to National during my time as a lead.

On the surface, my job as a writing consultant is simple: Help students with papers. This job is much more difficult than it sounds, however. I work with students in either one-on-one or small group settings, addressing concerns from grammar to organization to citation in a way that empowers writers to need less help next time. I also furnish in-classroom support for lower and upper division classes across the curriculum at Grand Valley State University through the writing center’s partnership with Freshman Composition and Supplemental Writing Skills faculty. Finally, I offer asynchronous online support to graduate students and faculty at Grand Valley State University via Microsoft Outlook. Each aspect of this job requires not only technical skill, but compassion and patience.

During my time with the Ford Foundation, I combined my extensive knowledge of Former President Gerald R. Ford with research conducted about programming from other institutions to create character-driven lesson plans that aligned with both Michigan Department of Education and Common Core Standards. I also lead groups of children ranging in age from five to twelve in museum tours and associated classroom activities during school field trips to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.

At GCC, more commonly known as Blinds.com, I curated a collection of documents pertaining to the company’s history and corporate culture. Once the collection was created, I designed, modeled, pitched, and assembled materials for a core exhibit to be built into a forthcoming office expansion. I also generated written content for the CEO’s Inc.com presence, the company’s website, and an employee blog detailing my time as an intern.

I was fortunate enough to work at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum while it was closed for renovation, allowing me a more hands-on collection experience. As a collections intern, I catalogued and inventoried a 20,000 item collection of artifacts relation to President Ford. Additionally, I crafted archival-safe enclosures for many artifacts, clarified artifact records in The Museum System, wrote highlights for the Gerald R. Ford Museum’s social media presence, and accessioned newly acquired items into the museum’s collection.
