Profile bio

About Megan Smalley

Since 2011, I have held jobs and internships in business-to-business media. My internship experiences taught me some of the basic skills I needed to pursue a career in B2B media. My internships at both Harbor Communications and Babcox Media taught me how to interview CEOs, CFOs and COOs for articles without fear while I was still a student. I also had a few opportunities to write cover stories at my internships, which taught me early on in my career how to compile in-depth articles for trade publications. When I graduated from college, I worked for a few months at The Vindicator newspaper in Youngstown, Ohio. I transitioned back to B2B media in late 2014 when I received an Associate Editor position at North Coast Media in Cleveland. For that position, I juggled my time each day on three publications – LP Gas magazine, Pit & Quarry magazine and PP&E magazine. It was challenging to learn the jargon in three different industries, but I was quick to learn the jargon. In addition to writing features and posting news to websites for each of those publications, I was asked to lead a few special projects at North Coast Media.Since 2017, I have held several positions at GIE Media in Northeast Ohio, working for both Lawn & Landscape magazine as well as for the Recycling Today Media Group. I spent about four years as a managing editor for the Recycling Today Media Group, helping to coordinate production of the magazine each month. In 2022, I became a mom, which is a totally different job not typically included on resumes! With this new role in my life, I decided to scale back to part-time work for the Recycling Today Media Group as an associate editor, working mostly from home. While I love my career and company, I did not want to regret missing major milestones in my daughter’s first year of life. I can pick up projects at any stage of life, but I only get one shot at being my daughter’s mom. In addition to my work experiences, I have volunteered for ASBPE, a national association for business-to-business editors, writers, designers and freelancers. I currently serve on the board of directors. I enjoy collaborating with colleagues from across the industry for the association, and it has certainly helped me learn new ideas to apply to my day-to-day work.

I write and edit features for Lawn & Landscape magazine at GIE Media as well as post content to the website. I occasionally host Q&A podcasts with landscaping industry professionals for the website.

Aug 2017 - Sep 2018

Associate Editor

Cleveland/Akron, Ohio Area

I assist in copyediting, writing and planning for Pit & Quarry, LP Gas and PP&E magazines, all B2B publications at North Coast Media. I also help the three publications out at some industry trade shows, taking photography and posting that to social media. It's a bit of a challenge learning about three separate industries – aggregates, propane and portable plants – but it means I'm constantly learning things.

Dec 2014 - Aug 2017

Reporting Intern

Youngstown, Ohio Area

As a reporting intern, I was assigned to cover anything that happens in Campbell, Struthers or Lowellville – all Youngstown suburbs. It's been an adventure with this position since I never know exactly what I'll be covering the next week. I can guess, but usually my guesses are off. I've covered fun pieces on a man who has new technology attached to his heart, a man with extreme beard styles and a man who had a passion about emptying animal shelters around Youngstown. I have also had to cover breaking news on Jim Trafficant's death, a former mayor who stole $100,000 from investors and Ebola. In addition to writing stories, I also plan art for most of the visual stories I write. I also check cop reports daily in the cities I cover. One to two times per week, I am the newspaper's night cop reporter where I cover any breaking news in the city or fun features happening in the evening. The Vindicator is an adventure. The editors themselves say you either sink or swim here because the team is short-staffed and the work is fast-paced. The first month felt like sinking, but after a couple months, I've managed to tread and swim. It's been a tough learning experience, but I know it's helped me improve as a reporter, writer and editor.

Jul 2014 - Dec 2014

Editorial Intern

Fairlawn, Ohio

Each morning, I put together a newsletter that goes out to tire dealers across the U.S. and update the magazine's Facebook and Twitter accounts. In addition to that, I have written two feature articles for the print magazine, conduct a "5 Questions With . . ." series with leaders in the tire industry, put together a social media survey for tire companies, help with sales planning, develop marketing plans and copyedit during production weeks.

Nov 2013 - Jun 2014

Web Editor

A Magazine

Kent, Ohio

I work with a team of web writers and post their content to the student-run magazine's website each week. I also wrote the cover story for the magazine's spring 2014 issue and write articles for the website.

Daily Kent Stater, Kent State University

Kent, Ohio

Covered the enterprise, academic, student affairs and general assignment beats for two years. Also reported stories on safety, city, administration, health and women's issues.

Sep 2010 - Dec 2013

Feature Reporting Intern

Columbus, Ohio Area

As one of the feature reporting interns, I cover all different fun things going on around Columbus: Jet pack rides, crazed metal heads, card designers and child prodigies. Most of the stories I write are long-form for the news, about 15 to 30-inches in length; however, I also have done a couple Q&A's for the Weekender section of the paper. I also got the opportunity to shoot a few photos for print during my internship.
