Amani Centre for Street Children is committed to reducing the number of children living on the streets in Tanzania by providing a nurturing place for homeless children to heal, grow, and learn. In addition to providing long-term care, Amani aims to reunite children with their relatives when possible and to equip their families with the tools they need to be self-sustainable. Lead and support the three regional MTFC teams in the Netherlands (Multi-Dimensional Treatment Foster Care; for youth with criminal backgrounds): specialized social work staff as well as all the specialized foster parents. Responsible for contacts with regional and national institutions that refer children to MTFC, as well as other partner organizations in child welfare and juvenile justice. Initiator and main anchor for the development of an extensive sexual health intervention programme for teenage street children in India (implemented in 20 street children organizations in South India): - the development and publication of 35 four-hour modules with creative, interactive games methods for (sexual) behavioral change (evidence-based methodology; total of 1,000 pages with hundreds of visual resources and game materials);- develop and conduct (2x/year) 15-day intensive training courses for Indian field staff and their management of eight partner NGOs; - lead/coach/support a team of nine professionals (public health, behavioral science, psychologists, media), as well as work with several external consultants and organizations;- strategic management to enable an effective implementation of the intervention programme in 8 partner NGOs. Coaching and support to their management and field workers / social workers (total group: 35 staff);- all further programme management, such as budgeting, fund raising (US$ 800,000.-), financial reporting, Public Relations and media, Human Resource Management.

Directly after the Tsunami hit Asia I took the initiative (as a volunteer) to write a practical mini-guide on trauma-relief for children and youth. This guide 'Suggestions for after-Tsunami Trauma Relief for Children and Youth' has been translated and published in Tamil (local South Indian / Srilankan language) and has been used by many organizations and individuals across the region (free download).

Development of an evidence-based behavioral change intervention program on sexuality and sexual health for teenage street children in India (based on my own 2001-2002 in-depth research study), including the project start-up and developing and conducting a series of conferences and training workshops for street children NGOs in India. Also, part-time assignment as guest researcher at the Department of Child Psychology / Developmental Psychology of the University of Amsterdam.

The Janusz Korczak Foundation Netherlands is active in the areas of child rights, pedagogy, and education. During my time as Board Member I also co-authored a book on "Children and Sexuality; a Positive Contribution to the Field" (see the web-links below for a review; in Dutch).

Behandelplanning voor 30 jongeren met een PIJ-maatregel (Plaatsing Inrichting voor Jeugdigen) of civiel-rechtelijke plaatsing. Verantwoordelijk voor het inhoudelijk beleid op 3 behandelafdelingen: ernstig vroeg verwaarloosde jongeren, jongeren met een borderline persoonlijkheidsontwikkeling, en jeugdige zedendelinquenten. Coaching van pedagogisch medewerkers. Tevens diagnostiek en individuele en groepstherapie aan jongeren.

Platform voor kennis- en ervaringsuitwisseling op het terrein van thuisloze jongeren in Nederland. Ca. 40 aangesloten organisaties.

Oprichter en coordinator van een middelgrote vrijwilligersorganisatie voor thuisloze jongeren (60 vrijwilligers). Aanbod naast de reguliere hulpverlening: o.m. maatjesprojecten en recreatieve groepsactiviteiten. Breed takenpakket; verantwoordelijk voor de totale ontwikkeling van de organisatie.

Beoordelen van fondsaanvragen op het terrein van welzijn, maatschappelijke ontwikkeling en hulpverlening (Nederland). Adviseren mbt financiering aan bestuur en directie. Het SkanFonds is gelieerd aan de KRO.

Dé ervaring die mij definitief liet switchen van de geologie naar de kinder- en jeugdpsychologie. Ik heb hier 7 maanden, 24/7, in een 'open shelter' voor harde-kern straatjongens geleefd, en ongelooflijk veel over hen en van hen geleerd. Vanaf dit moment is mijn werk steeds gericht geweest op kinderen en jongeren onder moeilijke omstandigheden, zowel in Nederland als internationaal.
