Fungi can remove toxic metals, and other harmful organic and inorganic compounds, from contaminated sites. For example, Ascomycete fungi can reduce toxic selenium (Se) oxyanions (selenate and selenite) to less toxic elemental Se(0) and Se(-II) compounds. The mechanisms that these microorganisms employ to reduce selenate and selenite are unknown. I perform lab-based experiments and utilize genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics tools to characterize the biochemical pathways that promote aerobic fungal reduction of the toxic forms of selenium to its innocuous form.
