About Maria Mejia

I grew up in Colombia, a country proud of producing what many consider the world’s best coffee. But I did not grow up drinking coffee. I hated its bitterness and did not want the sugar. The biggest irony of my life! After more than 30 years, over a decade living in the United States, and one class in New York City, I discovered Specialty coffee—a unique kind that tastes delicious without sweeteners. Since then, I have become obsessed with bringing Specialty coffee to a wider audience. Initially, because of its naturally sweet taste, but I left my job and went to Stanford soon after realizing it has the power to eliminate poverty and transform lives with a more equitable supply chain. This passion of mine started as a side hustle while I worked as an executive in oil and gas back in Texas. I recruited a friend who moved from New York to become my roommate and we roasted beans of Colombian coffee in my home garage. In less than a year, I went from not drinking coffee to winning two national awards: one for our roasted coffee and the other for the cold brew we prepared in my kitchen.I am building a startup to make naturally sweet Specialty coffee approachable and available using only two ingredients: Colombian coffee and water. Nada más! No sugar needed. Prior to that, I built from scratch and managed a multi-billion-dollar cross-border energy infrastructure business, critical and essential for energy security in the United States and Mexico. This included a $1+ billion, 200-mile pipeline from Texas that generates the electricity that powers Northeast Mexico.
