About Mel Clark

In 1975, I began my career as a part-time announcer while attending college in Jacksonville, Florida. Over the years, I’ve worn various hats in the radio industry, including Radio Announcer, Music Director, Program Director, Account Executive, Local and Regional Sales Manager, and General Manager. My passion for media led me to explore different roles and contribute to the success of radio stations across the country. One of my significant roles was as a Research Associate, where I conducted Strategic Research Studies for radio stations nationwide. Through these studies, we were able to enhance listenership, adapt music formats, and create effective branding strategies. It was rewarding to see the impact of our research on station performance. For 23 years, before retiring from the broadcast industry, my focus was on securing corporate underwriting sponsor support from local businesses for Public Media stations WUFT-FM (NPR) and WUFT-TV (PBS). These stations broadcast from the College of Journalism and Communications on the University of Florida Campus in Gainesville, Florida. I’m passionate about connecting with businesses and helping them align their brand with quality public broadcasting. With an extensive background in media sales, voiceovers, radio and TV broadcast, media planning, and contest promotions, I collaborate with businesses of all sizes. My goal is to develop sales and marketing strategies that not only boost their bottom line but also create lasting branding awareness within the community.

During my time at WLOQ Radio, a small Jazz station in Orlando, I honed my skills in conceptual selling. This approach, which focuses on understanding the customer’s broader vision or concept, allowed me to leverage my “street smarts” effectively. Let’s break down my experience:Conceptual Selling: Rather than simply pitching products or services, I delved into the underlying concepts. I believed that people buy for the solution, not just the features. By aligning our offerings with what customers truly needed, I could create meaningful connections.Starting from Scratch: I began with zero accounts. However, armed with the power of conceptual selling, I built a substantial account list. How? By demonstrating to clients that radio advertising would directly impact their business. Bringing new customers through effective advertising was the key.Street Smarts: My practical knowledge and understanding of the local market played a crucial role. I navigated the nuances of Jazz enthusiasts, local businesses, and community dynamics. This street-smart approach allowed me to tailor our offerings effectively. In the end, it wasn’t just about selling airtime; it was about connecting businesses with their audience and driving growth. Conceptual selling transformed my approach, and I’m proud of the impact it had on WLOQ Radio and our clients.
