The company’s formation made Southern Company the first electric utility holding company in 46 years to diversify its operations by forming an unregulated subsidiary. The new subsidiary grew to serve deregulated power markets in 10 countries on four continents. The company’s name changed in the 1990s to the Mirant Corporation.
