As a LifePath coach, I help guide students towards their goal of being the best version of himself that they can be, so they can make great contributions to the world as they move into the next phase of their life.

During my time at CIHR, I worked with two of its 13 institutes (the Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism & Diabetes, and the Institute of Aboriginal Peoples' Health) which taught me so much about stakeholder and community engagement. Being that close to our stakeholders made it so much easier to hear about the concerns and needs directly from the source, which helped us develop initiatives that would best serve them. Some of the skills I developed in that role are:- Event planning- Document design- Creative writing- Communications strategy development- Newsletter editorial & publication - Project managementThe work I did during those first few years and the passion I discovered for working with Indigenous communities led me to pivot into a role that was specifically designed to focus on the Agency's Indigenous priorities. Among other things, I became the main point of contact for one of the Agency's key advisory groups in Indigenous Health Research and found that work more than rewarding. In that role, I learned or enhanced the following skills:- Indigenous community engagement- Project leadership- Funding opportunity design & development- Relationship management- Meeting Minute MasteryLastly, I became heavily involved in the development and implementation of the Agency's Mental Health Strategy. I fed into our Mental Health directions, developed and taught a mindfulness workshop, organized employee engagement activities, and drafted internal communications geared towards increasing mental health awareness and reducing the stigma around mental health. As a Mental Health Ambassador, I was often striking casual conversations around mental health with the goal of making this topic something that didn't need to be discussed behind closed doors, in hushed tones, but openly and comfortably around the water cooler.

My public service career began here, as an Administrative Assistant in Marine Policy and the HR Directorate. Here, I used my strengths as a high performing strategic thinker to develop standard processes for all admins who step into the role within these two groups so they had specific step-by-step instructions for how to do anything. I was infinitely fortunate to be mentored by a Director who taught me the value of observing people, their interactions and their working styles. This created the foundation for learning how to interact with the different personalities you encounter in government, how to collaborate with them, and how to present yourself in a professional manner, all while delivering high quality work. He taught me that how you deliver the work, combined with how you "be", creates your reputation, and that this is more valuable than any other accomplishment you achieve. At such an early time in my career, those lessons were infinitely more valuable, than any skill I learned as an Administrative Assistant, and indeed, laid the foundation for every other skill I learned since then.
