Connect First captures the lessons I have learned over my 30-year career as a corporate coach and clinical psychologist. The book is written for a popular audience and is filled with practical advice that is immediately actionable, costs little or no money and takes virtually no time. The premise? To provide the tools for individuals to create a sustainable, energizing organizational culture. Work doesn’t have to be so hard. Each of us has a platform that can be leveraged with positive intention. We can all be agents of joy. There’s every day moments to create meaning and there’s no excuse for bad office behavior. Connect First is filled with case studies from around the world featuring people from all levels on the corporate ladder. The juxtaposition of diverse examples reveals the universality of emotional experience and our shared desire to connect first as humans and then as colleagues, clients and collaborators. My goal was to create a guide that could be read, shared and referenced by all members of an organization. At a time when AI is threatening the status quo, I argue that emotions are the ultimate disruptor.

Leaders’ Quest is a social enterprise that conducts leadership-focused immersion experiences ("Quests") for senior business, government, civic and non-profit executives. We work in the U.S., U.K., China, India, South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Turkey, Russia and Brazil, where I am the country head. The Quests unite seemingly disparate people, organizations and cultures--cultivating collaboration and relationships that shift world views, alter company strategies and stimulate community cooperation as well as novel solutions to global issues.I joined LQ when we were only four partners around a kitchen table - we now boast a team of over 80 professionals. We have 7,000 people in our 'global community' ranging from presidents, CEOs and entrepreneurs to community leaders and social activists. Leaders' Quest's unique methodology for promoting collaborative global leadership and creating transforming experiences has recently been the focus of a study at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

For over twenty years, I have had a private clinical psychology practice in New York City, and as adjunct faculty at Cornell Medical College, I train psychiatry residents in group therapy techniques, and the importance of understanding both the sociocultural context of individual psychological issues and the intended and unintended consequences of medical interventions. I also help develop the curriculum for the support and development of female leadership. I have been visiting faculty for Bocconi Business School in Milan, Henley School of Management in Henley-on-Thames, England, Kings College in London, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.I have been a co-author/editor of five books (on group process, treatment of eating disorders, cultures in transition, and the communication of neurobiological advances to general audiences), and I have written or co-written dozens of peer-reviewed scholarly articles on women’s advancement, power dynamics in health care, socio-cultural influences on diagnosis and treatment, and gender issues in the boardroom.

The Wharton Leadership Program and the Center for Leadership and Change Management develops world citizens – global leaders with an understanding of how they and their organizations can make a positive difference for investors, customers, employees and communities regardless of national setting, but with a deep appreciation for the distinctive cultures at play. The Center delivers a blend of coursework, coaching, experiential learning and conferencing to develop the personal leadership capacities of constituents at all stages of their careers. As a psychologist working in business, joining this faculty is a further expression of my commitment to combining psychological expertise, worldwide experience and business disciplines in order to enhance personal capacity and impact while driving organizational and social transformation.

Psychology @ Work is an entrepreneurial initiative that funded National Health Service care and research at the University of London by organizing faculty to provide consulting services to businesses. Leveraging expertise in behavior change and measurement, we led the field in crafting competency-based recruitment, assessment and development frameworks for the financial services industry. In addition, we provided employee assistance programs, forensic testimony and organizational development. Clients included Goldman Sachs, Coutts Group, Rothschild Group, and Northern Trust.

While living in Hong Kong, I was a director at The Business Practice, consulting on management issues in rapidly expanding Asian markets working with both corporations, as well as expatriate families.
