Melanie is a member of Watstein Terepka LLP’s complex commercial litigation and consumer class action defense team. She works on a wide variety of commercial matters including breach of contract, fraudulent misrepresentation, and unjust enrichment litigation in both deferral and state courts. In so doing, she defends companies against putative class actions and individual lawsuits involving a variety of state and federal statutes, including the TCPA, CAN-SPAM, state privacy statutes, state unfair competition statutes, and other state consumer statutes.Though Melanie has helped clients in all stages of litigation, from case assessment through trial and appeals, she also enjoys working with clients to create and implement bespoke policies and procedures to help avoid litigation altogether. Melanie Ng represented global manufacturers and distributors, international hoteliers, and real property owners in contentious and non-contentious matters. She advised Fortune 500 clients on sophisticated legal matters and effectively litigated complex cases to dismissal or minimal settlement based on legal precedent. Melanie participated in all phases of the litigation process, from pre-litigation claims and potential exposure analysis to pleadings, discovery, and motion practice, through mediation and trial. As a research assistant for Professor Sergio Campos, Melanie drafted memoranda discussing contemporary issues pertinent to recent updates of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Her research assistance primarily focused on standards of causation for federal class action suits subject to bifurcated litigation (specifically In re Roundup) to assist Professor Campos’ preparation for his presentation, "The Commonality of Causation," at the Inaugural Goldman Lecture at Ohio Northern University; the vast potential for e-discovery abuse; and commentary and analysis of recent Fed. R. Civ. P. amendments that attempt to deter discovery abuse. Moreover, Melanie drafted a proposal to allow at-risk diverse youth in the Southern District of Florida to learn more about the judicial system during an intensive summer program. She also reviewed working drafts and ensured citations were Bluebook compliant; reviewed, scanned, uploaded, and organized older work-product on Zotero; and ensured continuous organization of drafts and other materials.

As a student-attorney focusing on the rights of individuals experiencing homelessness, Melanie co-authored an article, “Challenging Domestic Injustice Through International Human Rights Advocacy: Addressing Homelessness in the United States,” for the Cardozo Law Review (published Spring 2021). She also assisted with the Clinic’s submission of a Universal Periodic Report to the U.N. Human Rights Council that highlighted criminal policies targeting individuals experiencing homelessness in Miami-Dade County and included recommendations to the Council to address these concerns and policy considerations. Melanie helped promote and organize the inaugural Petty Offenses Symposium: Challenging Criminalization of Poverty, Marginalization, and Gender Non-Conformity at the University of Miami School of Law in September 2019, and she also designed the graphics and digital layout of the official Symposium report.

As a law student, Melanie prepared initial draft versions of federal court filings for attorney review and approval -- including motions for summary judgment (which received partner approval and no edits before the Southern District of Florida subsequently granted these motions in full) -- researched and prepared memoranda on complex maritime liability issues; and assisted seasoned attorneys with their meritorious defense of international cruise lines and insured yachts.

Coach Mel mentored high-school student-athletes through individualized coaching; facilitated group discussions of challenging topics in athletics (female-athlete triad, eating disorders, burnout, and mental toughness) as well as conversations that acknowledged various challenges associated with service-learning; participated in local community service initiatives; and thoroughly documented all activities through photographs and consistently shared these experiences with others on social media. She was also responsible for caring for program participants who were sidelined by illness, assisting in the students' cultural immersion process, aiding in translation services, providing clean water to students and program participants, organizing meals, and maintaining regular contact with parents/caregivers.

Six days a week during morning practices, Coach Mel timed and recorded interval splits, maintained attendance records, set up weights and hurdles for strengthening work/conditioning, and facilitated a positive team atmosphere for varsity Hurricanes cross-country and distance track athletes in her official capacity as student-manager. During meets, she ensured that each student-athlete received his/her/their timing chip and/or number, recorded intermediate splits, provided mid-race encouragement, and assisted meet manager(s) with event setup and timing as needed.

During Melanie's gap year between undergraduate and legal schooling, she worked as the International Coordinator for the Peruvian NGO Seeds of Hope-Peru. In this role, Melanie oversaw all aspects of international fundraising, marketing, and management; international volunteer interviewing, placement, and recruitment; in-country service and support to international and domestic volunteers; participation in the daily tutoring program at the Seeds of Hope center as head elementary tutor; and development of both short and long-term projects in collaboration with other volunteers that addressed the goals and objectives of Seeds of Hope-Peru.*Melanie was also responsible for spearheading fundraising efforts, creating invoices and reports, supervising and developing content for all social media channels, reaching out to other volunteer recruitment agencies, creating and implementing an orientation program for all incoming volunteers, answering inquiries from present and future volunteers, purchasing necessary materials for the center, and ensuring that the tutoring program continued to function effectively on a day-to-day basis.*all in-country, hands-on activities conducted in Spanish

Coach Mel, a volunteer assistant coach, worked directly with the girls cross country team upwards of five times a week. Her duties included but were not limited to: timing during meets and interval workouts; ensuring that all athletes have appropriate competition gear; leading discussions on mental health, sports nutrition, and the female athlete triad; (occasionally) training alongside athletes to provide a source of encouragement and positive attitude towards the sport; and performing other tasks necessary to foster a sense of both athletic and academic well-being of all team members.

Her responsibilities as a student-athlete included up to twenty hours per week of NCAA-regulated supervised race preparation (running workouts tailored to expectations of competition, strength training), in addition to countless undocumented hours seeking preventative medical attention for potential ailments and customized physical therapy and training to combat physical weakness(es); meeting regularly with coach(es) and other influential athletic professionals; and participating in all team home and away competitions, including all events necessary for team-related competition, recruitment, functions, and travel.
