What a long strange trip it’s been! Back in 2016 things were perking along nicely. The publishing consultancy run by my husband and me was growing. My art and writing were moving ahead. We were pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps after the Great Recession. As we all know, life is what happens while you’re making other plans. I began feeling ill. Before a correct diagnosis was made, I was given medicines that triggered much more serious problems. I had a heart attack during a visit to the emergency room and a stroke two days later while the physicians were examining me. On the day between, the election was held. That was the first time I missed voting since I was old enough. Things look much better these days. My health is good. I am writing and making art again; my soul is happy. Our publishing consultancy is growing again. I have commissions for art and am cheerfully writing new pieces about my experiences with my health. I hope to be posting more about these over the next few months.

My special interest is writing for regional arts, humanities, and science organizations. Art:I am always looking for small venues to exhibit my artwork. My prints and note cards sell best in small locally-owned shops, restaurants, and galleries, especially around universities or arts districts. Many of my paintings and drawings are available to publishers seeking art for illustrations and covers.

Principal And InstructorJust The Place For Me Homeschool Mar 2000 - May 2010Guilford County, NcMy son's homeschool education followed the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction guidelines. Rather than purchasing an out-of-the-box curriculum, I selected books based on his learning style and level of study, usually relying on several for each subject each year. This required me to do extensive research into current pedagogy for twice-exceptional students. Subjects that were difficult for me were supplemented with instruction from tutors. In addition to traditional subjects such as mathematics, languages, sciences, and history, we included more rigorous classes such as debate and philosophy. We included many field trips, camps, and hands-on learning experiences to supplement classroom work. He is currently studying Japanese language and culture through NC State University.

Assistant EditorAmerican Schools Of Oriental Research 1983 - 1989Duke University; Durham, NcI copyedited all copy for Biblical Archaeologist, a popular magazine about Near Eastern archaeology. This included both manuscripts and galleys. ASOR published books, and I worked on those as well. I attended the annual conferences, held in conjunction with the Society for Biblical Literature, and assisted in the booth for ASOR. One of my favorite duties was attending presentations; if I liked them and thought they could be used for a magazine article, I wrote a summary and discussed it with the editors. Several were, indeed, chosen and resulted in articles published.Additionally, I created all inhouse advertising, from concept to final copy. Many of my ad designs were still in use fifteen years after I left.Increased Membership increased by 25%.

Patient Relations RepresentativeUnc Hospitals 1978 - 1987Unc Chapel Hill; Chapel Hill, NcOf all the non-publishing and non-artistic work I have done, working at NC Memorial Hospital, now part of UNC Hospitals, was the most challenging and the most rewarding. It was difficult at times, especially when patients passed away, but I learned so much about people facing illnesses and end-of-life issues. While most of my work was administrative and clerical in nature, all of it required communicating with overworked physicians, patients who were often as frightened fiscally as physically, and colleagues who were facing the same emotional and intellectual challenges of working in a hospital that I did. My job required me to create a detailed computer profile and make financial arrangements for admissions of new and existing patients. I sought assistance for those who needed help with costs. I guided patients and their families through the admissions process, including sending patients to labs and locating rooms for patients. Not infrequently it was necessary for me to assist families in locating accommodations as well. -
Circulation AssistantDuke University Law School Sep 1978 - Aug 1979Duke University; Durham, NcLaw professors need lots of information. I retrieved it from the Law School library, other libraries, and the occasional courthouse. I checked out materials from the Law School's library, did shelving, delivered mail to the professors along with any requested library materials, and helped students locate appropriate materials.
