About Melea Seward

Via my role at The Hired Guns, we build teams, consult on organizational development and strategic initiatives. We work across sectors including Tech (Google), Retail / E-commerce (Macy's), Media (Hearst), Healthcare (NYU Langone), Social Impact Organizations (Global Citizen), and Startups (Write Label). As a consultant, I thrive at the intersection of the web and the world. With a background in editorial coupled with a strong background in business development, I help purpose-driven people, businesses and organizations create compelling content, build new lines of business and careers, surprise and delight. I often get brought into organizations to:- build teams,- hire talent, - strategize a new initiative,- create business plans, - create web content strategy, - develop new ways to engage audiences,- facilitate workshops around communication and storytelling,- build new internal editorial teams, and more. I have also guest lectured at Sarah Lawrence College, FIT, The Kings College, The Rockefeller Brothers Foundation, Fordham University, the Freelancers Union, NY Cares, the American Society of Journalists & Authors (ASJA), the Levin Institute (SUNY), NYU (Tisch), Portland Underground Grad School, and In Good Company Workplaces. Additionally, I have facilitated trainings for organizations such as HBO and Ameriprise Financial. FOUNDER, BOARD OF USIn 2007, as a catalyst to launching my own business, I founded Board of Us, a playful facilitation game & group that individuals can use to make (better) decisions, have more accountability, and make more action happen in their lives. Board of Us is like a Board of Directors, but for individual people. The agenda is you. And everyone else on the board, too.WRITER, THE AGE OF ACCOUNTABILITYMy current writing / performance projects include a book-in-progress tentatively called Becoming Extra Ordinary. I perform excerpts on the web and in live venues in Portland and New York City. I have also started a project called The Wander Clock that started ticking on October 13, 2014 and concluded on October 13, 2020. Since then, The Wander Clock has turned into a curriculum for individuals and organizations to use time, attention, currency and relationships to design intentional (non-ordinary time) imbued with (more) meaning.

From Elixir: Melea is intensely curious about human nature. She tends to delve acrossdisciplines, nimbly moving beyond assumed boundaries. This cross-pollination gives her more material and experiences to mine when she’splanning a social media campaign, content strategy or audiencedevelopment rollout. Melea’s mission is always the same: to create meaning between anaudience, customer, or consumer and the business or organization tryingto reach them. She is known for leveraging existing networks to achieveauthentic lasting engagement, both online and off. Melea views digitalexperiences as an extension of real life, and the content strategies shedevelops are notoriously successful at blending the two. Her Internetsleuthiness enables her to identify and enlist as emissaries the leaders andinfluencers of the target market.Melea spent the first seven years of her career in academic bookpublishing, ultimately as a Sociology editor. She then moved into businessdevelopment for a global consulting firm that used tools of the theaterwithin organizations. In 2007, she combined these two experiences andbecame a communications and strategy consultant to a broad mix ofclients: small business owners, artists, writers, entrepreneurs and largebrands. In addition to content strategy, Melea has worked on brainstormingprojects, product naming, and ghost writing (whose roots, she likes to pointout, are narrative and connection with a given audience in mind). Melea’ssixth sense, or sensibility, influences her approach to all aspects ofcommunication. When not working, Melea can be found with her dogs, camping in thewoods, performing improvisational storytelling or written work, and ridingfat tire bikes on the beach at low tide in Alaska.

I developed a memento mori clock called The Wander Clock for myself to mark the time that I had lived as long without my mother as with her. Using the constraints of time, attention, money and relationships, I created a body of work over the course of six years that included storytelling prompts, writing projects, community-building, and performances in the US and Europe. I developed The Wander Clock into a curriculum for others that was truly a delight. Twelve students at a time designed their own Wander Clocks through group facilitation and experimentation prompts.
