I have always loved communicating with others, starting from a very young age. On report cards and at parent-teacher conferences, my parents would be told "Meliha is a great student who loves to talk. She’s able to talk with everyone, no matter where she’s sat!" As a chatty extrovert, it was no surprise I took an interest in studying Communication and Public Relations. Throughout my time in university, I improved my communication skills by taking courses on communication planning, social media management, content creation, multi-media storytelling, photography/videography, internal & external stakeholders, public speaking, pitching, and event planning. While acquiring these skills and experiences, I've learned how effective communication is vital for any successful organization. During the completion of my degree, I gained work experience in the non-profit industry. In my role as a Communications Coordinator, I increased social media engagement for the organization. In one year of leading social media, the organization's Instagram followers increased 20%, Twitter followers increased 5%, and Facebook followers increased 8%. Additionally, I helped improve public awareness through interviewing and digital storytelling, increased media relations engagement, and supported in event coordination/campaign management to increase donations. I love learning and working in the communication field because I am able to be creative while building strong connections with people. As I look for work, I always prioritize a communication role at an organization that is making a positive impact on our world, provides opportunities for their employees to express their creativity, and is an inclusive environment. I also hope to work for a company that has room for growth so that I can continue to learn and try new things. Equity, diversity, & inclusion are integrals aspects of being a communication professional. Therefore, I value working with organizations that prioritize implementing ethical practice, integrity, and social equitably in their workplaces.
