  • Australian Taxation Office
    Taxation Officer

    Hobart
I enjoyed a varied early career with the ATO then found my calling as a communication professional in the mid 1990s. Back in 1983 my very first task was underlining names on a computer print out so that a data operator could type the details back into the mainframe computer to check dividend and interest income - thankfully now the computers talk to one another. I was a tax assessor and staff trainer, established the inaugural Tax Officer Development Program in Tasmania, the Graduate Recruitment Program and then the Continuing Professional Development Program which brought lateral thinking guru Dr Edward de Bono to Tasmania to address Hobart's tax professionals, accountants and lawyers. I visited high schools around the state for the pilot Tax File Number School Program and worked in Canberra on the national implementation. In the mid 1990s I wrote and published the staff newsletter 'Taxmania' and was public relations manager for the ATO in Tasmania, working with Deputy Commissioners Rob Burr and John Ryan. Some of my colleagues in those early years became life long friends.
