I'm a science and parenting journalist and a faculty member in NYU's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. I write the Well Newsletter for The New York Times. My book, HOW TO RAISE KIDS WHO AREN’T ASSHOLES, was published in July 2021 and received a Starred review from Publisher’s Weekly, which said “this delightful mix of strategy and humor shouldn’t be missed.”I am a regular contributor to the New York Times and a contributing editor at Scientific American. I also write a free Substack parenting newsletter, IS MY KID THE ASSHOLE?In 2019, I won the Bricker Award for Science Writing in Medicine. My August 2018 op-ed in the New York Times Sunday Review, "Anti-Vaccine Activists Have Taken Vaccine Science Hostage," won Outstanding Opinion Article in the 2019 American Society of Journalists and Authors’ Annual Writing Awards. My October 2017 feature for Scientific American, "Journey to Gunland," won ASJA’s 2018 Excellence in Reporting Award, and "Deserted," my September 2017 feature for Women's Health, won ASJA's June Roth Award. My 2016 feature for Scientific American, "The Looming Threat of Factory-Farm Superbugs," won first place its category in the 2016 Awards for Excellence in Health Care Reporting and was a finalist for a 2017 National Magazine Award.
