Melissa Kent is an award-winning journalist based in Berlin, Germany. These days she reports mostly for Deutsche Welle (DW News).Before moving to Europe in September 2021, she was the spokesperson and head of media relations at Canada's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, where she helped develop and implement the mission's external communications strategy on issues from COVID-19 to debt relief to child marriage. She was also responsible for press outreach and social media messaging in French and English. Prior to that, Melissa was the UN correspondent for CBC/Radio Canada based in New York City. During her ten years in the posting, Melissa reported in English and French on local and international stories for radio, television, and the web. She covered wide-ranging topics of international interest from the UN and greater New York area, including discord in the Security Council over the wars in Syria and Yemen, the accusations of ethnic cleansing in Myanmar, Whitney Houston’s funeral, the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., and efforts to mitigate the COVID-19 outbreak.Her career as a journalist began in the CBC Montreal newsroom in 1998. Since then, she has held several positions with Canada’s public broadcaster, including investigative reporter, assignment editor, and current affairs radio show producer. Melissa was also a volunteer media instructor in Rwanda (2007) and Ghana (2013).
