Melissa is passionate about advanced technologies related to industry 4.0 including advanced manufacturing, additive manufacturing, data analytics, digital integration and IIOT. Her professional experience spans academia, where she rose to full professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of California, Irvine; to high-tech startups such as Morf3D where she served as the Chief Technology Officer; to corporate executive leadership where she currently resides at The Boeing Company in the capacity of vice president of additive manufacturing across all business units.Over the span of her career Melissa’s work has predominantly focused in the field of aerospace and defense, although earlier contributions focused on advancing a new technology of 3D ultrasound tomography for the early detection of breast cancer. To that end she served as Vice President of Mastoscopia, SA, the advanced medical imaging company. This is a cause that remains dear to her heart. In 2019, Melissa joined The Boeing Company as Vice President of Additive Manufacturing. In this capacity, Melissa continues to grow and scale additive manufacturing capabilities that solve difficult engineering problems, enhance product performance and deliver value to Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Boeing Defense and Space, and Boeing Global Services. Melissa is instrumental in driving digital integration and advanced data analytics in the additive manufacturing value stream. To that end, her team was awarded the ‘Manufacturing in 2030’ award by the Manufacturing Leadership Council for their work on digital thread integration.In 2024 Melissa was honored to be elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Additionally, she was awarded the SME Eli Whitney Productivity Award, and inducted into the TCT Hall of Fame for 3D printing. Melissa is enthusiastic about service to education and industry as reflected in the fact that she is an elected International Board Member of SME, and also serves on the corporate advisory board of USC’s Viterbi School of Engineering.
