About Melissa Pullara, Ph.D
I completed my doctorate in English literature at Carleton University in September 2019. My area of specialization is early modern English literature, with a particular focus in drama. My doctoral research focused on 16th and 17th century British politics, gender, religion, the supernatural in early English drama, and early modern concepts of psychology, the individual, and the mind. My current research looks at recent performances of the accused witch in early modern drama, analyzing adaptations of these plays through the lens of 20th and 21st century women's movements.I have recently started as an Assistant Professor of Early Modern Literatures in the Department of English, Languages, and Cultures at Mount Royal University in Calgary. I am an active member of the Shakespeare Association of America and the Renaissance Society of America. I have publications with the Journal of Marlowe Studies, the British Institute of Florence, the Italian Shakespeare Association, the Oxford English Research Journal, the Sixteenth-Century Journal, Arcana Naturae, and in a Trivent Publishing anthology series on early modern witchcraft and religion. I also have a publication forthcoming in an edited collection from Palgrave on violence and cultural trauma in early modern literature, borne out of a 2020 SAA seminar. I am an enthusiastic, passionate, and innovative intellect, critical thinker, and teacher. I work well collaboratively but also thrive in leadership roles.
