About Melissa Widman
Bubbly, Creative, Inspiring. Enhancing Relationships One Word at a Time.People are inherently interesting. My lifelong aim is to improve human communication, connecting with others through a variety of mediums, learning about how people tick, positively influencing others through speech and writing to achieve common goals, even those seemingly impossible. As a high school teacher of seven years in a rural community, I have witnessed a student win a $12,000 college scholarship for his multicultural essay he wrote for one of my class assignments; I have helped a blind student analyze literature in his own, unique way with the aid of technology; I have built a dance team from nothing, developing the confidence of girls who found fierce passion for dance, a life-saving force in their delicate lives. As an English professor at a community college, I have helped adults expose their genuine voices concerning current events, and have reviewed grammar my students never fully understood in exciting ways which resonated with them more deeply than past grammar instruction. As President of Columbus Celtic Dancers, a non-profit organization, I have put together all facets of an adult dance team to compete in a regional Irish dance competition for the first time; I have developed and started new socials, to enhance group community; I have convinced members, even beginners, to begin competing or performing, which has improved dancers’ confidence and connection to our organization. As a goal-oriented optimist, I strive to improve my life and those around me. I am always open to new opportunities, and would like to enhance the world of communication as I network with you all through LinkedIn. Feel free to message me!

Emerald Campus College Credit Plus Composition 1 & 2 Educator
Current
Adjunct Professor Of English
CurrentIn addition to teaching high school, I teach as an adjunct English instructor one evening class fall semester at CSCC, Composition II ... so far!
Trio Upper Bound English Instructor
This is a summer position at Columbus State. Through the Trio Upward Bound Grant program, I teach Columbus City School students from the most socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods to help them gain an advantage for the next academic school year. This past summer I taught English 9, English 10, and Project-Based Learning Grades 9-12. My English group won the presentation contest which is performed in front of all program students and instructors.
English Teacher
Throughout the years as a high school English teacher, I have taught every core English course offered to sophomores through seniors, which has made me a versatile teacher able to create and change materials as well as instructional methods quickly and efficiently. Courses I have taught include English 10, Honors English 10, English 11, Honors English 11, English Composition, English 12, Honors English 12, and Advanced Placement Literature and Composition. The summer before my third year of teaching, I was asked to teach AP Lit and Comp because our department head unexpectedly retired, and create a syllabus including all standards, getting it approved before the start of the school year. Within three weeks, my syllabus was approved, though I had a 50% chance of approval for my first submission, and I started teaching AP for the first time. Since I started teaching the course, most of my students have achieved 4s or 5s on the AP Lit and Comp exam.As a teacher, I constantly strive to help students become more skilled thinkers, writers, readers, and speakers, but most importantly, better people. I work to inspire my students to develop the love of learning, understanding of various perspectives, and a general respect for and appreciation of other people. Besides fulfilling Common Core standards, collecting data, and using technology, I help kids gain confidence in their abilities, become more humble, and reach out to others in need. I help adolescents aim to make a positive impact on the world.
Dance And Cheer Coach
My first year of teaching, 2009-2010 I became JV Basketball Cheer Coach. Then, I accepted the position as Varsity Basketball Cheer Coach 2010-11. My dance experience came in handy, as I prepared cheerleaders for game halftime performances, some of which I choreographed, and sideline cheers. I also prepared cheerleaders for competition, a new event, and choreographed their routine. I monitored cheerleaders while taking trips to conference basketball games, conducted practices, planned the season, and hosted parent meetings. I coordinated spirit activities involving basketball players, and organized season pep rallys enjoyed by the entire school. The next school year, 2011-12, I decided to build a dance team from nothing, ground-up, and coached the team for three years. I organized tryouts, bringing in college dancers as judges, chose my team, and conducted meetings after planning the long dance season lasting almost all year. I organized fundraisers such as gear sales and car washes so our small team could afford summer dance camp and uniforms. I choreographed all dances, particularly in the styles of: kick, lyrical, hip hop, jazz, and pom. The girls danced at varsity basketball halfimes, and practiced twice a week after school. Creating and maintaining this team was a fun challenge, as very few of my dancers had previous experience. I served as first dance teacher to many of them, and developed a true coaching bond with my team, instilling in them a passion for dance. I maintained our team website, adding text, pictures, and videos of performances. I planned dance field trips so the team could see college dance teams perform and watch high school dance competitions with the intent to partake in competition some day.
English Tutor
I tutor Columbus-area students / professionals in areas concerning writing, public speaking, reading, and test prep. Usually high school students need my help, but I have also helped college students prepare application essays for graduate schools. I tutor through Wyzant, as well as independently.
Desk Manager And Potential Student Host
At Ohio Northern, I served as desk manager and potential student host. As desk manager at the Affinity Villiage on campus, I conducted the apartment key check out process for students who locked themselves out of their rooms. I also checked in and out pool table supplies, Wii remotes, and Wii games to use in the entertainment area of the Affinity central building, in addition to monitoring student use of laptops in the computer lab. Since laundry facilities were also housed in this area, I helped students with questions, and provided general advice. As a potential student host, I chaproned visiting students, one at a time, on special visits to campus. I provided each of my assigned students a place to sleep, ate with her, introduced her to professors and coaches, and took her to class as well as dance rehearsal at the performing arts center for the dance company, or athletic center for dance team. I was paired with students involved in theatre, dance, the arts, or English, since my foci were in those areas. In addition, I gave personal campus tours, escorted potential students to events, and connected her to students in her areas of interest.
