Due to Covid-19 my role as a package manager evolved rapidly as we adapted to the changes and restrictions to the working environment. While construction was not fully stopped during the March 2020 lockdown, due to Crossrail's relationship with TFL we were instructed to close site from 26th March. As I was in a position that I could travel to site with little to no risk of covid transmission allowing me to be one of the first to return to site and my role evolved into supporting my team members by being the eyes and ears on site'. Due to the stage of the project we were in I was able to carry out site and final inspections with the client which provided the information needed that supported my colleagues who continues to work from home. I carried out site inspections for the design and commercial teams as they processed the final documentation for design packaged and subcontractors.I was responsible for a particular difficult subcontractor, effectively managing them to ensure the critical programme path did not slip further.

As part of the Platforms and Canopies team I was involved in the successful delivery of the final five platforms into service as part of the London Bridge Station Redevelopment project. I held responsibilities for the day to day management of subcontractors including the coordination and planning of works between areas and contractors. The contractor was responsible for the fit out of the stations canopies which included interface with the station façade. I planned and managed resources to ensure contractors had minimal standing time. My role included direct interface with rail management, including possession planning in a Network Rail environment. I also coordinated with other teams and contractors to manage areas of works where different projects intersected. My work with Costain has developed my technical engineering skills in the rail sector. It has also improved my management skills and abilities to build and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors and the client. With the contribution of my skills and management abilities, we have delivered an exceptional station which has met the client’s brief and requires little to no rectification or rework from subcontractors

As part of the technical team in the Canterbury Home Repair Programme (CHRP) I was involved in the structural assessment and repairs to homes damaged during the Canterbury Earthquakes. Fletcher Earthquake Recovery was set up as the Project Management Office for the repair project. My primary role involved the structural assessment of properties and production of damage reports complete with repair strategies. I liaised directly with representatives of the earthquake commission to ensure repair strategies met requirements under the EQC Act. I developed skills in structural assessment, cost analysis and report writing. I continued to develop skills in critical thinking, and creative solutions for each individual property requiring a bespoke repair strategy. That required me to take responsibility for engineering decisions on site during construction and manage contractors at the design and construction stages.

The project involved repairing and renewing horizontal infrastructure damaged in the Canterbury Earthquakes. I was directly involved with the day to day management of subcontractors and self-delivery teams. I was involved in the handover and return to client of some large projects, which included assets with no formal handover process when the project began. I was responsible for taking projects from end to end, which included ensuring landscaping was restored to preconstruction condition I developed skills in subcontractor management, communication, design changes, forecasting, financial and budgets, time management, subcontractor claims, contracts and variations, knowledge and interpretation of the specification.
