I am a researcher, historian, writer, event planner, and educator whose areas of interest and expertise include the music and culture of my native New Orleans, 20th century Black American popular music, and archives.Currently, I serve as curator of the Hogan Archive of New Orleans Music and New Orleans Jazz, a unit of Tulane University Special Collections. I oversee development, responsible stewardship, and accessibility of Hogan Archive collections, which represent an interdisciplinary approach to the history and evolution of the New Orleans community, music-related and otherwise, of the late 19th and 20th centuries forward. My work also includes acquisitions, reference and research services, donor relations, formal instruction, outreach, and community engagement. As an adjunct professor, I teach History of Urban Music at Loyola University New Orleans’ College of Music and Media. I designed the class as a historical overview of Black popular music in the U.S. from the turn of the 20th century to the present, with a focus on genre-driven movements beginning in the late 20th century. Discussions highlight music, music makers, audiences, business practices, recording and distribution channels, technological and media advancements, and issues of race and gender, as well as the definition of “urban music” and the sociological and political contexts that surround it.As an artist-scholar and music historian, my writing can be found in music journalism sources, and I've presented papers at meetings for the American Musicological Society, International Association for the Study of Popular Music, National Council for Black Studies, Society for Ethnomusicology, Pop Conference, Society of American Archivists, and Radio Preservation Task Force of the Library of Congress, among others. For 25+ years, I've volunteered with community radio WWOZ FM New Orleans. There, my "Soul Power with Soul Sister" show features music from my personal vinyl collection of over 10,000 recordings, which earned me a spot in the book, 'Dust & Grooves: Adventures in Record Collecting.'As a live DJ artist (DJ Soul Sister), I've performed with everyone from Questlove to George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, and was the first DJ to receive a prestigious Big Easy Entertainment Award, which I've won twice.I am dedicated to educating about music in various capacities, including moderating artist interviews, leading film screening talkbacks, and presenting public-facing series with musicians for fans.
