Component 1 (Corrections & Sheriffs)Local 104I represented the interests of the union members at my work site as Vice Chairperson, as well as representing the interests of all Corrections and Sheriff Officers at the Union level as an executive member of our component. My responsibilities included providing advice to union members, managing other executive members at the local level and ensuring that they had up-to-date training and information, working with the Occupational Health and Safety Committee to address concerns in the work place. I sat on a number of committees including the Joint Management/Union Committee that met to voice and resolve concerns that were affecting the work place as a whole, and the Grievance Appeal Committee that met to hear and decide on cases to be considered for Arbitration.

As a Correctional Officer it was my responsibility to uphold the security of the institution by maintaining a safe working environment through consistent practice of procedures and adherence to policy. Additionally, I acted to preserve the integrity of the corrections branch through professionalism in my interactions with outside agencies and the community, including diligent documentation. I was responsible for the supervision of up to 50 inmates as well as providing case management that involved setting behavioural goals, release planning, and providing inmates with programs and information that contribute to the operational goal to reduce re-offending. I was active in my workplace as Chair of the staff wellness committee organizing fund-raising events and coordinating and delegating staff to carry them out. I was also a member of the Emergency Response Team that receives specialized training to deal with emergent crisis situations to contain and deescalate the potential risk the offender poses to themselves or those around them.
