The Consulate-General of Japan, Brisbane is a Japanese Diplomatic Mission and is part of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. My position at the Consulate-General allowed me to undertake a wide variety of tasks and to support and assist the Japanese community residing in and visiting southeast Queensland. In the Cultural Affairs Department I performed such tasks as:- Planning and coordinating public events related to Japanese language and culture including the annual festivities of Japan Week, the Japanese Film Festival, the "Revitalise!" Sister City Conference, as well as numerous exhibitions and other public events.- Assisting in the coordination and presentation of the School Visit Programme for local primary and high school students studying Japanese.- Administering the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Programme - promoting, recruiting, selecting and preparing young Queenslanders to live and work in Japan as Assistant Language Teachers and Coordinators for International Relations.- Writing, designing and distributing a regular Japanese cultural events newsletter.In the Consular Assistance Department my role covered such responsibilities as:- Liaising with the Queensland Police Service regarding matters of security and consular assistance.- Interpreting, translation and liaison during crisis and emergency situations involving Japanese nationals.- Maintaining security protocols at the Japanese Diplomatic Mission.- Other tasks involved high level speech writing, media monitoring, customer service and client management.Throughout my role I helped to create a better understanding and promote the development of ties between Japan and the people of Queensland. My goal was always twofold: to help Australians better understand Japan and its people, customs and culture; and to assist Japanese citizens living and visiting Queensland, helping to make their time in Australia as enjoyable and trouble-free as possible.

During my years as a Coordinator for International Relations on the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme I performed a wide range of international exchange activities for the local Nobeoka City Council. Throughout all of my activities I fostered international relations at a grassroots level.Major duties included:- Translation of official documents and interpreting for government officials.- Teaching community English classes to local residents.- Visiting local kindergartens and primary schools to present classes about Australia and the English language.- Regular international exchange event planning and implementation.- Receiving guests of the Nobeoka City Council from overseas.- Writing, designing and distributing a regular international exchange newsletter for the local community.- Advising and planning international exchange programmes between Nobeoka City and their sister city in Medford, USA.- Supporting and speaking at functions organised by local not-for-profit groups, including the Nobeoka Rotary Club, numerous English conversation groups, and a wide variety of other local community groups.

I accompanied the groups from their accommodation to various popular sightseeing locations, where I explained about Australian native flora, fauna, culture, climate, language and more in Japanese to my tour groups. In addition, I also worked as a Driver Guide, where I drove the tour bus while presenting a running commentary in Japanese to my tour group.I always remained personable, friendly and professional throughout my role, and provided excellent customer service and informative, well researched content.
