Profile bio

About Melissa Padgett

This year is my 7th year teaching High School Social Studies at Summit Academy Toledo. I have been in the process of pursuing my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Liberty University and Grand Canyon University. Course work at Liberty University specialized in American History and instructional methods to improve student learning outcomes. The course work at Grand Canyon University focused more on the needs of urban school environments, including the development and delivery of professional development for staff and how to effectively use data to drive instruction.Following my graduation from the University of Toledo, I have taught grades 6 through 12 in varying social studies content areas including geography, early and modern American history, modern world history, American government, economics and personal finance over the last seven years. My teaching experience includes teaching in a small K-12 charter school, a larger K-8 charter school, a small catholic school, and substitute teaching. My student teaching experience was in a traditional public school system where I taught modern world history at the honors level as well as a Early High School Option (EHSO) 8th grade section of the same class. In this experience I also team taught one class of American Government and observed the teaching of my cooperating teacher's AP American Government class. My position at Summit Academy requires me to be familiar with Special Education requirements and the awareness and implementation of accommodations needed by my students in accordance with their Individual Education Plans. I use principles of Trauma Informed Instruction, Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, Restorative Practices, Social Emotional Learning in my classroom on a regular basis. In my lesson and unit planning methods I use a combination of elements from the Understanding by Design Framework (McTighe and Wiggins) and Visible Learning framework (Fisher and Frey). My favorite skill to teach within the context of all of my Social Studies contents is writing about informational texts, primary sources in particular. The resource that I prefer to use for this activity is the DBQ Project's Mini-Q series that addresses different topics within my course work areas. These resources encourage students to work with primary sources and think critically about the "why" and "how" of historical events. The learning that occurs in this process is enjoyable because there are so many "lightbulb" moments that the students remember years later.

Listed skills include Powerpoint, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Word, Teaching, and 15 others.
