In October of 2009 I was hit by an SUV while riding my bicycle. The impact split open my helmet and the entire back of my skull. The odds of me surviving was low, but through miracles and willpower, I stabilized on day 3 of being in intensive care. I was diagnosed with severe brain damage and the doctors predicted that "I would never be employable again." My olfactory nerves were severed, so I didn't have a sense of smell. I had a severe stutter, I couldn't recall simple vocabulary, couldn't walk without falling over (so I had to use a walker for 1 year) and I couldn't process information or conversations in real time.Though the left side of my brain went almost completely dark, I still had enough synapses forming on the right side of my brain for me to creatively come up with my own treatment plan that was "operation get my brain back". Through meditation, clean eating, putting myself into stimulation overload and a LOT of mind over matter, I was able to rehabilitate my brain and fully get back into the workplace. From a quote from my Zappos Teammates "Melissa brain dead is still smarter than any of us. We'll follow her lead anywhere." I was extremely blessed to have the Zappos family on my side and their belief in my ability to rebuild was everything.
