About Melissa Read

I am passionate about helping students who have been labeled as “less than”, those perceived by some as not ready for college or capable of college-level work. I love it when, after years of feeling otherwise, students realize their potential, that they in fact can succeed in college. It's why Commencement is so special -- seeing them walk across that stage knowing their story and all they have achieved is truly a joy.Throughout my career, I have focused on creating and implementing innovative, holistic programs to serve these very students, meeting them where they are and preparing them for what’s next in their journey, be it the next course, semester, study abroad experience, transfer college, graduate program, or job. As an academic administrator, I have designed new majors and general education programs, advising and academic support services, career development strategies, and first-year and senior seminars. As a professor, I also use a holistic approach, teaching not only course content but also how to learn that content. Drawing from my long-standing yoga and meditation practice, I incorporate mindfulness and mindset strategies to provide students with the tools to strengthen their resiliency and ability to focus so they can succeed. It is not just a job for me, but a call to serve.
