Melissa joined The Nature Conservancy Kauaสปi Island program in 2008, served as the programโ€™s deputy director from 2011 and became the program director in 2017 and was responsible for overall project development and management of the Kauaสปi Program, overseeing a budget of approximately $1,000,000 and a staff of five. As director, Melissa helped facilitate and write environmental assessments and management plans to build fences to protect watershed areas and native ecosystems. She worked closely with public and private landowners, supporting the Conservancyโ€™s role as the coordinator for the Kauaสปi Watershed Alliance and as Chair of the Hawaiโ€˜i Association of Watershed Partnerships. Melissa is currently the Philanthropy Writer for the Hawaiโ€˜i and Palmyra chapter, collecting stories, managing project teams, and developing the narrative to showcase the work. Directing conservation projects for The Nature Conservancy in Hawaiโ€˜i led her to the understanding that minds, thoughts, and situations are changed through stories. In her current role as Philanthropy Writer, she animates field projects, carrying them into hearts and homes by sharing the importance of conservation work with all audiences.
