What were the stories you grew up hearing? Most of us grew up with the classic Grimm or Anderson stories. But those aren’t the only stories Hispanic kids hear. Latin American and Caribbean culture is full of weird, wonderful, and utterly terrifying stories of our own.I have had a lifelong fascination with the paranormal. And I’m not alone. In fact, just under 60% of the Latinx population and more than 40% of the US population overall believes in the supernatural.Through ¡Ay Ghost Mio!, I hope to build bridges across Latinx cultures, built on the unexplainable. The tales we were told, or perhaps not told, as children may differ in the details, but they’re all set on the same foundation. Stories about creatures that go bump-in-the-night reveal both what we admire and what we fear. They show us our values and examining them closely gives us the opportunity to question deeply ingrained cultural beliefs.
