I'm a fiction writer, certified habit coach, public speaker, and longtime blogger. I've published more than twenty books for kids and teens, and have worked as an editor at DamnInteresting.com, The Greensboro Review, Random House, HarperCollins, and WIRED.com's GeekMom. I'm a frequent speaker on education and parenting topics at conferences nationwide. I've been blogging about books and educational resources at Here in the Bonny Glen (melissawiley.com/blog) since January 2005. I also teach writing and literature classes to kids ages 7-17, both locally and at BraveWriter.com. In summer 2017 I moved to Portland, Oregon, to take on the role of Community Outreach Advocate for Independence Northwest, a nonprofit that serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. My role involves legislative and community outreach to advocate for vital supports for people experiencing I/DD.
