About Mel Lawrence
I'm a social work student at Charles Sturt University, passionate about ADHD, neurodiversity, and creating inclusive systems. My journey has been shaped by my personal experiences, and I'm driven to challenge oppressive norms and promote understanding, support, and accessibility for individuals who think differently. As an Intake Advocate for Disability Advocacy NSW, my role centers around empowering individuals with disabilities to self-advocate and access tailored information and access to vital support. Drawing from these experiences, I actively contribute to Disability Advocacy NSW's systemic advocacy efforts by identifying emerging trends, collaborating in meetings, and providing valuable input for informed strategies and positive change.Recently, I had an amazing opportunity to contribute to the Parliamentary Inquiry into ADHD assessment. Leveraging my expertise and personal experiences as an individual with ADHD, I provided valuable insights, research findings, and compelling client experiences. By shedding light on critical issues such as access to diagnosis, associated costs, and the impact of ADHD in adults, especially women, I aimed to raise awareness, combat stigma, and advocate for improved support and resources. In addition to my advocacy work, I'm deeply intrigued by the transformative potential of technology and gaming. I am passionate about using technology and designing accessible systems that cater to diverse needs. Additionally, I am exploring how video games and tabletop role-playing games can be used to facilitate mental wellbeing, identity exploration, and a better understanding of ADHD, and diverse experiences. I believe they can provide a powerful platform for therapeutic support and self-expression. Incorporating elements of technology, gaming, diversity, and mental wellbeing, I aim to contribute to this exciting field of research and practice, embracing diverse ways of thinking and being, while considering accessibility factors like literacy, digital literacy, affordability, culture, and individual needs.Driven by my own journey of self-discovery and the realisation that current systems can be oppressive, harmful, and stigmatising, I'm committed to making a difference. With my diverse skill set, including social work, technology, and a passion for change, I aim to contribute to the development of better systems, policies, legislation, and practices in government, medical, and organizational contexts. Together, let's create more inclusive, understanding, and empowering spaces for all individuals.
