Profile bio

About Mel Monier

Nice to meet you! I’m a PhD student and Rackham Merit Fellow in the Department of Communication and Media and Digital Studies at the University of Michigan. I use humanities-based research methods, primarily interviews, and apply intersectional feminist theory and queer of color critique as frameworks to study digital media. Broadly, my research focuses on the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and embodiment in the digital. Black feminism is central to my research as a theoretical framework that illuminates the intersections of identities, centers lived experience as a valid form of knowledge, and pays attention to labor (especially invisibilised or uncompensated labor). Having worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, Instructor of Record, and Graduate Student Instructor, my teaching is informed by Black feminist and queer theory which seek to center personal and lived experiences, support diversity and inclusion, and advocate for self-care. Guided by these praxes, I center my instructional methods around three objectives: (1) create space for students to feel safe, seen, and supported, building upon frameworks of community care and support; (2) prioritize self-care and reflection in the classroom and in the curriculum; and (3) provide students space to engage with identity and systems of power, developed through critical engagement with media.I also have a decade of experience in advising and facilitation related to higher educational access and equity, DEI and identity, and employment/job skills. As a first-gen college student myself, I am passionate about supporting young adults from underrepresented communities and giving them the tools and confidence to be successful.I look forward to connecting with you and learning more about your interests and ways that we can collaborate and cultivate meaningful work and community together.
